i am fully aware of the wonderfulness of steam and its cleaning ability.

after seeing the price of an industrial/professional unit a while ago i tried making one out of a wallpaper steamer and a basketball needle..... yeah it was poo so i gave up on the whole idea.

about 4 years on ive seen these new handheld steam pressure cleaners coming out. at a very affordable price. 15 - 50 quid

120- 200 degree C steam at 3.5 - 5bar of pressure.

anyone tried one out on an enginebay? or their wheels. a few say they do brake dust on alloys but im wodnering how exagerated the claims might be?

thanks in advance
jim

Not good if u want to protect the paint, engine degreaser should be fine.

the Diesel engine Kartchers are the best! as long as you avoid picking it up via the metal pipe

lol on the karcher monster. thats a little bit too overkill for my liking

and i may resort to engine degeaser, i just dont like paying everytime i want to clean my enginebay on a new car etc. plus degreaser never really seems to fullfill what i was expecting from it.

ive gone for a 15 pound jap one on ebay. 3.5bar of 200degree steam (or so they say) worst comes to worst and it doesnt clean my engine bay i can use it as a present for my mom/sister

ill do before and after pics and post them if theres anything worth mentioning.

cheers
jim

use TFR and spray on, leave for 30 seconds, hot wash off with steamer, and bay and anything else comes up spotless

i've been steaming engines for ages with the above karchers and only ever had a problem once on my 406 v6, water got into a coil bank and caused a misfire. left overnight and it was fine next day. i don't ever cover stuff up either!

I have one of the above big karcher pressure washers. I used it nearly all day last weekend taking the paint off my girlfriends horsebox. Came up a treat.

So as for the dog, id imagine it would definitely be dead, and definitely be bald!

its here. it works.

it cleans about...1 or 2 square mm every 5 seconds.

i also had to use half a roll of blue tissue. the water that comes off dries pretty quickly and resets any dirt that was in it straight back onto what ever surface its splashed onto.

so yeah ill be in my engine bay for a while. its horrifcally grotty to begin with so dont take this info discouragingly

as a whole im very impressed, each 2mm section every 5 seconds or so comes up sparkling

for detail work or intricate part cleaning its ideal (throttle body insides are clean as a whistle now)

cuts through grime, oil, grease, s**tty celotape crap on windows, gaffa tape residue, cleans the ribbed protecting sheaths round your wiring loom and makes em look brand new. and its still yet to chip my paint.

officially my new favourite toy *two thumbs up*

shame it cant fix some of the rust its uncovered though Sad
