hi my freind recently bought a w reg gti6, it had recently had the matrix done, the bulkhead pipes popped out of the matrix and I noticed the wrong seals had been used, they was to fat/thick and this was stopping the pipes clicking into place, we got the correct seals from pug and it clicked into place and fitted lovely (I lubed up the seals first with a bit of engine oil first).
Anyway 500 miles later today under normal driving doing 70-80 on the motorway and the pipes popped off again, we thought the ignition wiring behind the steering cowling was on fire at first LOL.
It's showing no signs of head gasket failure but we've not really taken any notice of the pressure in the coolant system.
Has anybody else experienced this?
Just wondering if the plastic on the matrix isn't formed properly and the clip needs to slot in further, but I can't pull it out without pressing the clip in at all, should we be pressure testing the cylinders now to make sure it's got the right compression on all 4?
Thanks andy

It sounds like the pipes have been slightly damaged when they were removed to change the matrix. Have a good inspection of the connection parts to check for any damage.

Hi, it's fitted and clicked into place properly, can't even pull them off if I tried, I'm going to check the pipes as there was like a split in the middle that I noticed when I fitted the pug seals but it looked like it was formed/moulded with it so didn't think much more of them, other thing I was thinking was if the matrix was a s**tty pattern part and the slot for the metal clip isn't deep enough but they have clicked into place lovely.

well these pipes will pull off if I wiggle slightly while I pull,
I've fitted some another set of pipes and they still pull off, the different pipes I've tried have a plastic clip instead of metal.

I'm thinking the heater matrix is a Cheapo factor one and the groove that the clip slots into isn't big enough.

Has anybody come across this before?

umm mine did this!
it blew off and i had to get the old dear to rescue me LOL
mine was a Nissens heater matrix, matrix pipe clip is metal iirc

had been running the car for a few days after doing heater matrix, i pushed it back on and used a bolt to jam the clip in the closed position been fine since

car took about 3 month for the smell of antifreeze to f**k off

There is a metal clip that just clips in that came on some used pipes I've bought, i can't see how this fits though.

i think it just pushes down, i think i had bent mine up when removing it?
so it lasted a few uses then popped up for enough to work itself loose when warm

yeah, that'll be the metal clip I told you about and why the pipes will just pull off...

I thought you ment the metal clip thing that you push to remove, I never realised there was another clip thing until I bought some more pipes from dan and the clip came with it!
Does anybody have any pics of how this clip thing fits?
Thanks andy

I tried mate, if the clip end goes towards the bulkhead, i couldn't see anything for it to clip into, it also looked like the foam/rubber sound deadening around the matrix pipes was in the way. Confused

Ok my mate called at mine to collect the said clip, while here I grabbed a spare set of pipes out the garage and with 1 look at them we worked out where this said clip goes!
He then went home and rang me within minutes to say its clipped
In and is now solid, he's a very happy chap tonight!

And I now have to fit this clip to my car as I can't remember having this on!
