Just sorting out some wiring and I have a question about wire 426. From what I can remember from doing my GTi6/205 conversion this wire sends the rev counter/tacho feed from the ecu to the dash clocks yes? Does it also supply the speedo feed on the 306?

As I will soon be fitting a DTA ecu the feed for the tacho comes from that, I am right in saying that I just have to connect the wire from the ecu to the 426 wire to the back of the clocks?

Speedo on 306 is from the VSS in the gearbox, this needs switched 12v, earth, and signal wire to speedo.

Does the signal wire from the VSS go through the ecu first?

can't remember LOL I think it splits

I'll see if I can find a diagram....

looks like it splits off to ecu and cluster not to ecu then from separate pin.

Cheers Mei. Struggling to make if out on my phone but is it wire 465 according to that diagram that sends the speedo feed to the clocks?

that's the best quality version I have to hand sorry, I've got autodata working again so I'll endeavour to get a larger copy hosted.

AFAIK wire numbers are the same across all 306's for the same part/function so if you have a haynes you can double check it on there.

no worries Mei, had a look on google and found a better pic of it.

No sign of a 465 wire in any of my dash plugs Hmm looking through the Haynes manual my dash wiring is upto April 97 and I can't see speedometer mentioned anywhere in the instrument cluster diagrams.

that's because yours is an S16 and the speedo had to be wired in a different way because the engine orginally picked up the speed from the ECU and the S16 box had no electronic drive on it, but the XSi box i put on did. i didn't personally wire the clock up, but i think it's the sole wire [green] behind the clocks which ran to the ECU

the more i think the more confused i get. i just know the speedo didn't work obviously when i got it all running again (in 2006!) because i'd ditched the S16 (mechanical drive VSS) box, so had to do the above mod to get the speedo working

ahh was the XSI and S16 a cable speedo with electronic signal to the ECU? that's how the ZX 16v was done, same ecu+engine.

his (my Razz) xsi was always electric (p1, but 1997 R plate) and as such had p1 electric clocks. s16 engine was a std 1993-1994 RFY lump, with RFY box (cable driven). box casing got smashed on the way home i think, swapped old xsi 5spd onto it...

i suppose so, i didn't ditch it.. everything worked when i sold it, if that helps LOL

phillipm probably did it, even though it had no dashboard in the car or wiring loom even present when he had it, it was probably still phillip's fault Yes Whistle

I have done a bit of searching, checked the S16 engine loom that was fitted and the VSS did split off but to the double relay Hmm the vss is electric not cable driven as rikky said. it all worked when I parked it up in the garage so I will have to trace what was sending the signal. i do have a few miscellaneous wires unaccounted for so will start with them.

luckily i kept all the wires i have cut just in case Whistle

on the loom Doh

all makes sense now, two of the dash plugs have been modified, one for the omex shift light thing split off wire 426 and the other was this:

i could see that the white wire was 401 but couldn't make out what the brown was. for some reason I didn't follow it back to the bulkhead plug Doh

cheers for the help guys Thumbs up
