Morning all.
I have just finally got myself a nice gti6.
I intend to use it on the road this year with a few track days thrown in for good measure and then retire it for track only next year when I can afford a daily driver too.
I would like some advise from you knowledgeable fellows as to setting its suspension and brakes up.

Heres the plan so far:

Rear (already lowered 30mm, which is plenty for me):-

Rebuild the rear beam (replacing all bearings and seals as necessary)
New oem mounts with black powerflex tensioners.
Possibly a slightly larger arb from spoox at first with standard torsion bars.
New drilled and grooved discs and red stuff pads
service the calipers
Remove the load sensor gubbins and the abs (as the pump has packed in and i prefer it without anyway) re run the brake lines with stainless flexies and a proportioning valve in the cabin.

Front :-
Service the hubs and replace bearings and seals as necessary
New drilled and grooved discs and red stuff pads
service the calipers
black powerflex bushes front and rear of wishbones and new arb bushes.
decent stiffer engine mounts (not sure which yet but not solid)

What do you guys think of this combination to start with, am I heading in the right direction. I would appreciate your advise on this combination and also some suggestions on tyres and shock/coilover combination. I will be putting 4 new of each on but there is so much choice out there I would appreciate some suggestion from those that know!
At the moment I want the car to feel pretty tight and positive but not rock hard and rattly. I realise that just servicing all the running gear will help but I may as well upgrade while I do it.
Is there any point upgrading the rear arb without doing the torsion bars. Later on I will put on a pair of OMP braces at the front and be doing some power work but I want it to handle and stop nice first. I also want to keep the standard 15" wheels as I like the way they handle on them. I think the higher profile tyres tend to give you a little warning before breaking free of the road when giving it some stick.
Sorry this post is a bit wordy I wanted to give you as much info as possible.

The others can give you an idea on tyres and shocks. But i strongly advise you poke about the chassis rails for rust.
And if you have sideskirts; check under there.

Engine and gearbox mounts from baker BM are good.

Hybrid arbs are supposed to be great along with 21mm torsion bars from xsara vts.

What about shocks?

Shameless plug but ive got a rebuilt beam with solid mounts and a Hybrid ARB fitted for sale.Also have roller bearing front arms which are a cracking upgrade and better than powerflex items if any good for you Whistle

^ cheaper and easier than rebuilding your own too. Plus hybrid arbs aren't that easy to come by.

Personally, I would recommend a set of Ferodo DS2500 pads for the front end and just stick with standard pads and discs on the rear. Yes

As for suspension, Spax do a very good kit for these at around the £350 mark, which will set you up nicely for some trackday action. Failing that, if you want to spend some money, then a coilover kit from the likes of KW is very good indeed. I currently run this setup and can't fault it. Cool

As you say, a good service of all the components will be a very good starting point. Thumbs up

Thanks all for the quick and useful responses. I knew I had come to the right place.
Mr R Rat, very interested and how much would you be looking for theses said components. Are the torsion bars standard did you say? and will the solid mounts be too rigid for the roads bearing in mind pot holes and English roads?

Stan - great suggestion with the rear brakes thanks and I looked at the KW website, they seem really well sorted, ( and I love a bit of bling)

Solid rear beam mounts are a very good upgrade IMO,the rear end feels alot tighter and more predictable.The only thing I noticed was more road/brake noise from the rear,but nothing to worry aboutThumbs up
Stay away from Red Stuff pads IME,as Stan says DS2500 are better all round padsYes
I would recommend them front and rear for track work,but standard are fine for fast road use on the rearThumbs up
I followed peoples recomendations on here about TB's and ARB for a fast road set-up,that is standard ARB and 21mm VTS TB's,coupled with Koni shocks the rear end is spot onCool

Worth investing in some 7" wide lighter wheels and tyres. The standard wheels are heavy and narrow. Tyres are entirely your choice. 55 profile are standard, but 50s are cheaper and there is more choice.

Suspension, a lot of people run the Bilstein B8/6 and eibach setup. Its a very good compromise, if a bit soft for track. If you are stripping the rear of the car then don't worry too much about making the rear springs stiffer - they can become a bit nose heavy. The hybrid rear arb is great, but they don't come up second hand often. Its on my list too. Coilovers can be the way forward, KWs do turn up on here fairly often and I know of a set of AST sportline 1s in someone's garage needing a home.

As above, yellow stuff are ok, red not so, but its your choice - some people love them. I'm not sure DS2500s will be good enough in a normal weight car on track for any length of time. But then do you really want to be caning the car for more than say 7/8 laps of combe without a break? Its not a race car! Don't forget brake fluid - ATE super blue is half decent and doesn't soak in much water. Standard discs from Peugeot or Brembo originals. Cheap and they work.

Tbh the best money you can spend is on getting the car right for you and then having tuition. Smile

Thanks again for the warm welcome from you all.
How do I get in touch with a Mr swampy. I was going to make up the lines myself but if he can do it reasonable then he can have the business.

Regarding the rear beam and wishbones, MrR it is a very intriguing offer and one I shall consider. Unfortunately it has come very early as I am living in Switzerland until the 1st of May so cant do anything immediately. If you don't mind I will keep in touch and we can discuss further on my return if you have not already sold it.
Out of interest, what shocks would you use with this set up, just so I can get an idea of budget. Also were the bearings replaced on rebuild and could you possibly set it at 30mm lower than stock for me if I go ahead.

It was using the KW v2 rears, basically re-valved (maybe) konis. It is already -30mm or so and was rebuilt by Carl Grimsley (user Mechanical Repairs). Not sure when but Ash knows the date and what went into it - its from a forum member's car. See the for sale thread Smile
