i've never heard anyone with anything positive to say about the rotary engines, EVER. except phil, and i think that was only because he used one as a door wedge and it worked well in that environment

except avoiding tax. but i think i'd rather pay £450 a year and have to fix a v8 m3 every other week than a rotary engine

Tell him if hes going to go rotary, go RX7. And I'm not just saying that because of my most recent purchase Razz LOL

The RX8 engine was their attempt at "improvement" but as usual they just created more problems with this already high maintenance engine.

A engine where a rebuild at 60k is considered maintenance even though its no even particularly fast and they spunds a bit s**t is never a good thing imo.
I think rx8s are a bit s**t all looks and no go and you will be overtaken all the time by a boggo 320d even though you have a "sports car"
They also go through oil like i go through packs of starmix.

I would have a 350z and about 10,000 times over

Lovely engine, smooth as butter, pulls from anywhere in the rpm range, never feel strained, use less oil than most modern engines these days and at least it's by design....

...eat coil packs/leads/spark plugs for fun, are a b**ch to keep cool, randomly explode once or twice a year.

I owned and ran one for three years (not 'just had a shot in a mates one'Wink. A few misconceptions to clear up here...they are a lot faster than a 306 both in terms of torque and top speed. They do use oil but Mazda recommend one litre per 1000 miles which worked out for me at two 5 litre canisters a year...or about 40 quid...so not exactly a bank breaker!

As Phil said, they like their coil packs/leads and spark plugs but again, I found it cheaper to have mine shipped over from California than to buy local. They are heavy on petrol but if you find that a problem you really shouldn't be buying one....or even asking about them.

On the serious side, I bought mine with 25k on the clock and ran it to just shy of 60k when it slowly started loosing power. I tried changing the coil packs & plugs as recommended by the RX8 forum but this made no difference. I took it to Mazda for a compression test which revealed the worst.....low compression in both halves of the engine. I was lucky to sell mine but it does seem to be a major problem with the rotary engine around the 60K mile mark, so beware if your friend is in the market to buy one.

Well I can write pages about the RX8s, as I just dug into these myself quite well. See here:

http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=285103

(engine rebuild pics at page 9. - bought it with engine failure)

And I can only second what Phil said. Problem is usual drivers know feck all about how they should use and treat a rotary.

-If you start the engine DO NOT turn it off until it's warm.
-Premix the fuel with 2T oil
-replace the thermal pellet inside the eccentric shaft to allow oil get into the rotors under 60°C
-forget what Mazda says with 0w40 and other silly water like oils. Only use 10w40 semi-synthetic good brand oil
-redline it at least once a month
-buy it with a f**ked engine for pennies, and rebuild it yourself from less than 800 quid

0w30 and 0w40 are fine, it's #W-20 you should avoid.

Also, beware of remapped ones - it's very easy to get some extra ponies up top by leaning the fuel mixture out. What most numpties who remap piston engines don't realise is that fuel is in there to keep the EGT's down and the side seals cool. Without it they wear a LOT faster.

If you want to get away from replacing coil packs/leads/plugs all the time, the D585 coils and Magnecore leads we switched to never missed a beat.

Have to agree with a few people, I drove a high horse power one and was serverly disappointed (but at the time I owned an Rx-7) but a lot of people's blow up due to poor maintenance or lack of. My Rx-7 had done 85,000 without any problems and then slowly started using water. I rebuilt it myself (know my way around a set of spammers) and it was a piece of cake compared to a piston engine. Like a few other have said they drink fuel an eat plugs (which aren't cheap) and replacing the thermal pellet is a very good idea.

Indeed, rebuilds are really easy if you know what you are doing.
The only bad thing about the Renesis are the only two oil nozzles per rotor housing, as opposed to the three of the RX7. But if you premix (so the fuel injectors are used as secondary oil nozzles, letting vapourized oil into the rotor housing) you don't even have to worry about this.

The Series 2 Renesis has 3 oil injectors, however, premix is still better.

Personally, I'd love one of these. I've never driven a rotary engined car but as an engineer the whole concept of it is brilliant and I'd love one. I also think they look fantastic and I've never heard a bad word spoken about the handling of them.

I think the high power RX8 is a good alternative to the Toyota GT86.
