Hi,

Had a look at the pads on the front brakes earlier and there seems to be two wires running to the pads in the caliper. One of them has snapped. What is the function of the wires?

Thanks, Tom

They are for the wear indicator. Not overly important.

Exactly that, not needed at all if you visually check your pad wear frequently. The way they work is, the end of the wire is buried in the pad material and when the lining gets down to where the wire touches the disc it earths through this and brings up a warning light on the dash to tell you that your pads are low...

Before you ask the next question, no it won't matter if you chop it off at the pad. Doesn't need to be plugged in and won't throw any lights or errors in doing so. Get the snips out.

Just out of curiosity, which warning light are these supposed to flag up? The few times I've had pads that actually had these wires and worn down so that they should be doing something, I've not noticed any lights on the dash.

When you brake you will get an orange light which looks like as follows: (•)

The only difference being the circle in the middle is larger. Yes

I didnt snip mine off tonight, i just pulled then completely out because when i snipped them off there was copper wire there which could get into the brakes and cause squealing which is a pet hate of mine. I do spend a bit of extra time to make sure the brakes never get a chance to squeal, by cleaning and using copper grease on pads.

LOL I've literally never seen that before! Not that I've ever needed the warning, I keep an eyes on things like pad and disk wear myself anyway. I wouldn't trust something like my brakes to a dodgy little sensor on any car!

    Laugh my ass off

I haven't seen it on my car!

In fact the pads for my Brembos don't come with wiring wires. Laugh

However, I have witnessed it a lot in my time on a lot of other Peugeots. Yes

No real need for them anyway, the brake feel and squeal will be more than enough to let you know they are on there way out, they can tend to make noises as you drive along too.

Also, it's not difficult to just have a quick 5 second gander at the pads as you walk up to the car to get in...
