New to the gti-6s so I have no idea about their setup. I went to change the ball joint this morning but had to give up soon after taking the wheel off due to time, When I went to put the wheel back on only 3 of the bolts would do up, the 4th had a Knackered thread, and so did the spare one in the locking nut case. Can anyone tell me what I need to do/replace in order to be able to make it drivable again as atm i'm now £500 less well off and no car on the road

Thanks

A hss tap should sort the thread out, depends how bad it is so you might have to get a new hub.

On my hub the hubs thread got damaged not the bolt after a wheel came off.

Use a fresh bolt and see, if it not fitting then hub need a tap to reline thread or another hub will be needed.

You can buy some bolts from here or ebay.

Tried on of the others in that hole, would go in so far then got a little had to turn then freed up again, didnt force it though. When I pulled it out the thread wasn't the best on it either so I think it'll be best to get a new hub and bolts.

What sort of price am I looking at + work will be needed on replacing this?

It's worth checking the brake disk is sitting in the right place, if the hole is slightly off centre that could well be catching the side of your wheel bolt when fitting. If you have the screws fitted in the disk it can't really happen but I've seen a lot these days not fitted.

If you don't have an obstruction then as mentioned above run a tap through the hole as you've probably got a damaged thread in the hub, in my experience the hub is a lot stronger than the bolt and usually repairable.

Yes and much cheaper to do it that way, ie tap.

Its size is M12 1.25 pinch.

Ahh right, I have got a tap set here, but I think i'll change the hub and bearing just to be safe. and also knowing that'll be one thing good for a while. Still not the best with expecting a hefty garage bill for my 205 in the next few days Sad

Are there any guides around on here as to replacing them? Will try and pick up a haynes manual in the near future.

Thanks

There is a weld raised bit on shock where it goes into the gap of the hub. Use new bolts and nuts too.

Ok, on 2nd thoughts I might have ago at tapping it 1st. As I dont want to spend too much on the car until I know its safe on the MOT in a couple of weeks. As the car is only intended as a run about. (bought it thinking if it fails hard then i'll swap a few bits over for my 205 project)

So I guess I'll have ago at cleaning up the thread with a tap, if that fails it'll be a new hub. Any other 306 models that have the same hub as I might try picking one up from the scrappy before going down to the motor factors

You will need to measure the balljoint diameter as early hubs had a 16mm balljoint hole in the bottom of the hub, whereas later ones had an 18mm hole to accomodate a larger balljoint pin.

Would you happy to helicoil all four threads on a hub, just I have had to re-cut them with a tap but they are still eating bolts ?

This, retapping the same size won't fix a knackered thread, that's only an option for cleaning up threads where the first or last form has been burred over.

you can still drive it on 3 bolts if your desperate. just dont be silly and avoid potholes.

your bess bet is to replace the hub, i did this t'other day off of my xsi onto the gti. a day of ballaching but it got me the MOT. and a slightly better condition bearing

helicoil would probably be ok but i would rather just replace to flange for peace of mind. can send you a good used one with new bearing which you will have to get pressed in, £35. Any decent garage will only charge you 1 hours labour, alternatively source another hub.

I'd go elsewhere if someone took an hour to change a wheel bearing...

to replace bearing and refit hub assembly to the car then i think an hour's labour is fair. If your just asking to R&I the bearing then yes, less time.
Mei have you ever thought about giving up servicing push bikes and getting a job in a garage, you do appear to be very competant
