Right before I start I can't believe I did this with out thinking

So I was out yesterday almost home an the stop light came on with oil light, so got back carefully checked oil it was low so put a litre in that I had, let it settle for half hour then when of out via the garage a mile up the road got another 2 litres put it in, fort nothing about letting it settle jumped in an away I went fort about a mile down the road I should have let it settle .
So couple miles later with stop light on it got rough an wanted to die so stopped an left it till today then started in wouldn't idle went again with slight rev an was fine but fair it of smoke from exhaust and tapping a lot

What's likely to be the damage

As the others have said, it will be the engine getting tight due to low oil and the ratTle will more than like be the bottom end bearings, not the best news I am afraid.

It's definitely knackered if you needed to put 3 litres in it. Yes

Time for a replacement or rebuild yours. Wink

Yeah top end would drain the tappets with low oil pressure causing top end tapping on top of bottom end rumble/knock

Its quite easy to tell the difference between a top end tap and a botto end rumble as welsh puts it. I thinks thats a good description Thumbs up

indeed, that is of course if it hasn't developed into a bottom end knock which is also quite distinctive.

crikey, 3 litres low! :O

If it's bottom end knock you can usually feel it through your feet as much as hear it. It is very distinctive and deep. You may have gotten away with just grinding a bearing down to nothing and not spinning it, which means a regrind on the crank, oversize bearings and a very thorough flush out with a couple of filters thrown away to make sure you get as much of the ground down shell out of the system.

Or just buy a bare head & block and swap it over.

It doesn't sound good either way, I would look at a replacement lump as you don't know what else has been damaged from the low oil running.
