Just got a replacement engine in the car before crimbo due to doing some serious damage to my last one.

The engine originally came from my mate's 6 and then got transfered to our 309 track car. Then engine had been a snapper but everything was fixed and ran in the 309 for a couple o years with no probs at all. The engine was removed from the 309 and has been in storage for approx 4 years( it was turned by hand now and again but not that often if i'm honest)

Anyway its now back in my 6 and appears to be running well, pulls well and actually feels a wee bit better in mid range.

However there is a whining noise that seems to be coming from the cams area at the cam belt end. I had cam belt cover off today and can't see any problem with the belt, tensioner or idler.

I have never taken a head apart before, is it possible that a bearing has dried out of flattened slightly during non use and making the noise?

Seemed to be ok for tension. Might lossen it a bit and see if that helps. I am a bit wary of this though since it would appear that a loose belt is what killed the other engine.Sad

if its been stood for 4 years then i would be replacing the cam belt kit along with a fresh water pump

I'm not a fan of 'loosening' timing belts.

Don't take any chances with belts, better to spend a little money now rather than risking damaging

your new engine

Sorry should have said the engine got all new SKF belt kit and water pump before being dropped in.

No chance of it being the PAS pump? They can sound pretty dubious when they start going

Chances are then you over tightened it slightly then. Pin it all back up and do it again and it'll probably be fine

Thats a possibility, run engine with aux belt off if noise disappears then you'll know cam belt is fine

If new kit has just been fitted then as was just mentioned above, time it up and back the tension off a bit

To test how tight the belt should be - You should be able to twist the longest stretch sideways. if it goes over a full half turn then it's too loose.

If you can't twist it, then it's too tight!

^^ Correct lol. Although iv'e got a Conti/dayco kit on mine. When my new engine goes in it will be

a proper Dayco kit, especially as their are now offering up to £2500 towards engine damage should

it break!

Initially thought it ma be the ps pump but when listening to the with a makeshift stethoscope it sounds fine. I'll try removing the aux belt just in case. If that don't work I will try pinning the pulleys and slackening the timing belt slightly. It can be twisted about 1/4 turn at the moment. I thought skf had a decent reputation but didn't realise other manufacturers were offering guarantee

you only get the guarantee if its done through a garage, although, ive fitted many dayco kits to alot

of different cars and never had an issue with them.

Skf are a bearing manafacturer, so bearings will be fine, doubt they actually make the belt though

Think the belt itself is continental right enough

Out of interest is the general rule of thumb 1/2 turn or 1/4 turn for the tension?

Correct, i tension all belts this way. When i worked for Peugeot dealer years ago, we had the 'seem' gauge, it worked

out at 45 degree twist on longest run

There is no cam bearings, they just sit between the head and carriers.

Yes, longest run (between inlet pulley and roller) you should be able to twist the belt at least 45 degrees without excessive force but not more than 90 with excessive force. So roughly around 60 degrees with moderate force is correct.

No, no bearings as such. However, the carriers and the head are matched. Yes
