I was making the point hat something that drives as well is likely to cost a lot more and have a more prestigious badge.

Corolla T-Sport does not fit into that category.

While an OK drive, it is numb IME. Although nothing will go wrong with it, and it is made of thicker steel than a 6.

They do look a fair bit different than a normal Clio though. Wider wings, different bumpers etc.

You musn't worry too muh about your macho image.

this thread was only supposed to be a passive and friendly query into what people thought would be a good car to buy for the requirements i listed but it seems everyones taken my comments to heart Dunno on one car i said i wasn't very keen on. just my personal taste as the clio 172s and the like are still quite similar in styling to a normal clio you see everyday

a clio v6, now thats a car i WOULD drive

Hmmm, & I was making the point to the OP that there is a car out there that is insurance friendly, that can be far more economical, that the mrs thinks is grown up, that is reliable, that is completely off the average traffic cops radar, that can be had for £2k & has 190+ bhp under the bonnet.....
Ok it's not a 6, that's the idea.....
The handling on mine was transformed by fitting lowering springs & a progress updated rear arb...

Cool

306 is much better looking outside but Clio is more modern, better built (?), better interior and might be better dynamically? Dunno never driven one.

What lets the 306 down is the thin panels and the not-very-good interior. Otherwise it is as good or better than drive/looker than much more expensive and newer cars. And is fairly simple underneath as well - if I can work on it, it must be.

I disagree, it's the interior of the clio that really shows it's cheapness and the first ones are just plain awful inside. I know the 306 has a bit of an unusually shaped dash but it feels solid enough inside. Also it does look feminine although I'm sure it would be great fun to drive one.

I'd say get a phase 3 GTi6 for about £1k and use the rest to convert it to LPG dual fuel. On petrol alone my car was getting around 30mpg on average mixed driving. Costing me 20p per mile. Now I've had it converted I'm seeing on average 26mpg mixed driving and only 12p per mile. 300 miles out of a £30 gas fill instead of 400 miles on a £75 petrol fill. Well worth it and although loads don't believe it, power has stayed the Same! Thats what I'd do if i was you mate

If you can find a tidy one, a 205 or a Renaultsport Clio. I got back behind the wheel of a 205 for the first time in 2 years on Friday after having a 309 and a 306 since selling my 205 Mi16. Even though it was just a 1.9 8v and I only nipped round the block for a test drive, it felt fantastic.

Saab Aero. Won't get much quicker for £2k and that would include a remap. My old one was circa 240bhp and averaged 32mpg.

Exactly what i was going to say. Get a 93 aero. get a lot of toys for your money, very quick and good mpg and built very very well. Alternatively if you can get one, get a 93 viggen. Its got the 95 aero engine in with a different map. Put it this way, my old 95 aero would happily keep next to a M3....a 93 is a couple of hundred kilos lighter!
