Due to my gearbox being covered in crap, it's in need of a good clean.

I'd rather remove all of the innards and give the casing a proper blasting, but how hard a job is that to do?

Do the gear clusters come out in one piece or am I likely to open it up and lose several parts?

Remove drain plug, drain oil out into a container. Replace plug, top up gearbox with fairy liquid, take it for a quick spin.

Drain fairy liquid, replace with gearbox oil, job done. Shiny gears.

Owain, that is exactly what I would do if it were the gears that are dirty, however it is just the casing

How do you know? Have you checked? If it's the casing them just leave the plug out of the filler once you've filled it with fairy, it'll all bubble up and soak the casing.

I use hay. Does a brilliant job.

The horses love the taste after too.

Get it bunged up and soda blast it. Depending on the corrosion, which it obviously won't touch, it usually does a nice job

I was thinking of getting it soda blasted, just thought it might have been easier if I could remove the clusters but it appears not to be as simple as I'd hoped it would be.

I'll probably just try and bung the holes up

Did you have a price for the Soda blasting? We've got one at work I might be able to get a decent price on (depending how much you're quoted)

Many many years ago I bought a Cortina 2.0 Ghia, lovely car but once I had driven it for 40 miles or so the Diff became very rumbly and noisy, f**ker I bought it off had added sawdust to the rear axle oil so was reconditioned axle/diff time Crazy , still ended up a nice car though and I had it a good few years, sold it and bought a 309 - been in french torture ever since,

So it did used to get done lol and it does work (for a few miles anyway)
