car has developed a problem over the last few days.

day #1

when the engine is started the engine / car vibrated like it is a Hog bike. idle is fine. drove it to work and noticed the engien would hold back around 3500rpm but then release and be normal again.

day #2

drove it to work again as i was going to call the garage to book it in. same as day one on the way in BUT when driving home the car would not go above 2000rpm so limped it home at 35 - 40mph.

day #3 took it into the garage

day #4 got the car back from the garage who told me they couldnt get a reading from the lambda from their diagnostics. they replaced thsi and took it a drive along the dual carrageway and told me it was fine. my dad picked it up as i was in work. he told me he thought it was a little sluggish so i took ti for a drive

again still vibrating but will go above 2000rpm BUT still pulls back around 3000rpm it also stalled a couple of times.


I took out the ICV and gave it a clean also made sure the MAP sensor was connected right.


so i now have a car which Idles fine but is like a hog bike for the first few minutes of the engien starting, occationally stalls and holds back in any gear if you put the foot down when it reaches around 3000rpm.


garage alaos told me they took the cat off and it looks fine.



any suggestions? is it the ICV or MAP or a buggered CAT?


I also ran it for a short while with the airfilter / breather off to make sure it wanst an air flwo issue. same result.

airfitler / breather are all clean

It does indeed sound like a collapsed exhaust to be honest.

Could well be a buggered cat. Has the car been running rich at all, any black smoke from the exhaust when booting it?

i have now taken the ICV out and given it a clean. hasnt made a difference.

another thing to note is i can rev it in neutral without issue. only hesitates when under load.

Its unclear but are you saying that its running like a dog for the first few minutes and then its fine???

first plan of action is to contact the garage and ask if the diag showed up any other faults.

anyone know the bosch part number of a phase 3 map sensor?

it runs like a dog for 2 - 3 minutes then the engine sounds fine. to start with it judders and sounds like a harley bike. then it settles down but even when it is settled the hesitation on acceleration is very noticable

where do you think i stand.

took it to garage they identified a faulty sensor (lambda) then told me it was fine. as soon as i turned the engine on i new it was a little better but not right. then took it a drive and had the same simptons.

what am i better doing? buying a tps / map at a cost of £100 or take it back to the garage and let them get on with it. they charge 40£ +vat an hour and £40 for diagnostics. i presuem i wont get charged again for that as they charged me already.

Hmm

I would test the coil packs first from cold amd see if disconnecting one doesn't make a difference to the sound of the engine.
Do you know how to do this? It's easy and won't cost you anything. Smile

My first thought was coil pack as well.

Possibly chucking the unburnt fuel down the exhaust and giving a faulty lambda reading? (this is me thinking on a Monday morning and has no mechanically sound logic behind it) Thumbs up

Yes and no.

It would appear that if the coil pack has completely failed and therefore does not send a signal back to the ECU the ECU will not send a pulse to the injector on that cylinder which is quite clever. However, if the coil is still electrically working and sending signals, but has failed in such a way that it cannot properly fire the plug, the ECU could still be delivering fuel to that cylinder. Yes

Just put it in the garage.mum folowed me and told me there is brown smoke when I accelerate out the exhaust

black possibly which means overfueling, not calling your mum a liar but you only get 3 colours of smoke white,blue and black.

A pals car is fine till 6k then holds back. On a laptop at 6k the tps flips to 0% throttle.

Yours could be faulty at 3k

map sensor ordered (they got the phase 2 version the first time) should be fitted today. heres hoping it fixes the issue.
