this may sound crazy and far fetched...or not. but my friends rx7 has a belt driven air pump which sole purpose in life is to pump fresh air into the exhaust system to dilute it to reduce emmisions for "legal" reasons.

this seems a very cheeky/sneaky way around the law in my mind and cant quite see how the law hasnt seen it for what it is really doing (wasting fuel). but just wondering what people thoughts were on retrofitting my old aircon pump to do the same on my gti? and wether it is a legal and legitimate way to lower your emissions??

cant wait for peoples take on this

jim

It's only relevant to a rotary engine as the combustion temperatures are lower than that found in a reciprocating engine. The idea is that combustion continues in the exhaust to reduce the unburnt fuel released, which usually happens anyway in a reciprocating engine due to the higher combustion temperatures.

also the m3 evo's had them. when I had mine up on the ramps we disabled it as it was making a horrid noise but it still passed MOT's on the emissions side

Might as well employ a midget to blow in the intake.

If I was paying a Midget to blow, it wouldn't be in to the inlet.

I've seen these on BMW's. Apperently they introduce fresh air into the exhaust before the cat and the extra oxygen helps it to reach opperating temperature quicker resulting in the cat being able to reduce hydrocarbons and co. These pumps can become very noisy when they wear out and sound like a ten year old vax on full chat for about a minute after the engine is started. Basically its to reduce cold start warm up times.

If your car isn't likely to pass its emissions test then it would probably benefit more from a new lambda sensor/green temp sender/cat.

The limits are quite lenient anyway so I don't understand why you should need this on an old Peugeot.

As Rich says though this may well be a different principal to that used on a rotary.
