Looks like the debris fence did it's job pretty well... Assuming it's job were to catch the car and drag it further in towards the crowd. The rest of the motorsport world ditched catch fences a long time ago...

The fence stood up well, especially the posts after witnessing it first hand

Since when? I can't remember the last motorsport event I attended that did'nt employ fences to keep the spectators separated from the action. What are you suggesting is the answer? Move the crowds back 100 yards so you see f**k all like in the F1? Or perhaps stay home and watch on TV? Motorsport is Dangerous, the signs plastered all over the track warn you of this, there is always an element of risk, freak accidents happen, deal with it. The chances are that you're far more likely to die on the way to the track in a car accident, faint from dehydration from sitting in the sun drinking beer or choke to death on food in the stands than be killed/injured by the sport in question. It's sad that people got hurt but blaming the fences is pretty misguided, as it happened only the engine and wheels made it through, if there was no fence the whole car would've barreled into the crowd. I know which I'd rather see.
