I've noticed recently there has been a sudden influx of driving instructors (in Bristol) who are teaching the young 'uns to drive in hot hatches. DS3's are popular and also Corsa VXR's and others and these are proper stickered up learner cars. In my day you would be lucky to drive anything more than a 1.1 s**tbox. Anybody else have this around your area?

Seen a DS3R, Mini Cooper S JCW and a Astra VXR round here. God knows why they put learners in these cars!

In Jesmond, home of the rich kids with daddies wallet, they have cars like that because they're too good for lesser spec models

Yeah man VXR's are very popular round these parts for learners for some reason. I learned in a Austin Metro back in my day.

Mind you, a lot of the instructors don't look much older than the learners so I imagine in the evening, off come all the stickers and then they use the car for tearing up the streets.

They were quite fast little things to be fair. I nearly got my hands on a GTi Metro in the mid 90's.

^^^ +1 to that, I was rocking the burgandy Metro look back when I took lessons. Spent most of the time bricking it that the car would stop as the instructor would always turn up with bugger all fuel in the car and the light would be on for the whole time.

My first ever lesson was in a micra 1.0. Was some yocal old guy who was cheaper than bsm etc.

I soon found out why though, Within about 10 mins i was on a b road, he hardly spoke or told me anything, seemed very angry and half way through the lesson lite up a cigar!

I went with bsm after that.

hahaha this is fairly similar to my instructor who was an old woman that used to show me her arthritic wrist whilst I was driving. In a non sexual way mind! Jesus I cant believe I let a woman teach me to drive.

It was back when theory tests had literally just come out, so about 1997 and I kept failing due to me being so paranoid that every question was a trick question, so I answered wrongly even though I knew the actual answer. What a plum! I passed my actual test first time though.

My instructor was a religious nut who had a bible on the dashboard at all times. I think he was a very nervous man...

I learned to drive in a 1.6 Focus Mk2 and a 1.3 Corsa C diesel. Also had a family 306 1.9TD that I drove as extra practice.

But then I only passed my test in 2009!

Also learnt to drive in a metro 1.1L 4 speed tan coloured piece of crap....but at least my instructor would launch the car outside of school where he used to pick me up.... I steered and he did the pedals for the first 2 or 3 lessons from school. Felt a hero in that metro....

Half the learner cars round here are lookalike motors with 1.4 vxr looking kits and I know the citrons are the basic deisels by us...

I know a couple of people who learned in older diesels, passed their tests then spent the next few weeks constantly stalling petrols as they thought all cars had that much torque low down.

I think Ian's right - instructors can't afford to run two cars anymore, so whatever they teach in they have to drive themselves when they're not working.

Extra insurance, fuel and maintenance must be a nightmare. Bigger tyres, servicing costs more, brakes cost more, very odd.

Good marketing in my view.

17 year old lad looking for a driving instructor has the choice between a 1 litre corsa or a hot hatch; which will he choose?

I learned to drive when I was in college in norfolk.

I had driving lessons in a metro. But when I came home at the weekends, my dad would let me drive his Toyota hilux. It felt like a monster truck compared to the little Austin Hyper

theres lots of ds 3 s and minis round here fiestas too one of which t boned me a while back. I learnt in a 1.8 fiesta diesel and was told then instructors preffered diesels because the clutch was easier to learn as a diesel is harder to stall too

In Portugal that kind of marketing strategy began a few year ago!!
In 2001 i drove a vauxhall nova 1.5d during my driving instruction...

But now, it's usual to see 120d, audi a3, Golfs, A class mercedes.

Lies! You learned in a huge rollerboot with a top speed on 4mph and no real turning ability. The only way to stop was to lean forward really hard so it tipped up on its front stopper.
