I have searched for this but cant really find a answer to my question Sad

I want to buy a xsara VTS rack my my PH3 gti. I understand that the vts ph1 rack is 2.1 turns and the ph2 is 2.4 i think.
What i want to know is, is it basically a direct fit for the ph1 rack onto the gti in terms of pipe connections? im pretty sure it bolts to the subframe the same as all racks?

cheers guys

The ph1 is yes. The p2 not so much. Hoses are different on it etc..

The phase 2 rack only has different pipe connections. It's a direct fit if you use the Xsara pipes. The phase 1 rack uses the same pipes as the GTi-6.

Not sure. Last time i checked most of those with p2 ones sold up for p1 as its easier.
Im sure you can just get the ph2 vts pipes though

Edit: what rich said

The ph1 is 2.4 turns lock to lock and the ph2 is 2.6 turns.

    Ah great cheers.
Ill go for a ph1 then. Got the chance to get a brand new one for £140 so should also freshen the steering right up!
Not looking forward to fitting it though....can you wiggle them out the wheel arch or is it a drop subframe jobby?

    2.4 or 2.6 ?

What's the lock figure for a gti6, surely not much more than any of the above?

I think the standard gti6 rack is a lazy 3.2

And to my knowledge, phase1 xsara is 2.4, phase 2 is 2.6

Oh okay, I thought it would be an inconsiderable difference and hardly worth it,
but I suppose that could be quite a noticeable leap?

I just found a reg number from a ph1 vts and wacked it into ECP. They do one for £301 but about £150 is a surcharge you get back when you take your old (or broken spare....Big grin ) back so its actually quite cheap and should freshen up the steering seeing as mine has a fair bit of play!

Would they be able to tell the difference if you give back a 6 one?

doubt it. they look identical and i know when i took back a starter motor, the bloke just opened the box to make sure it was there (maybe he thought i was trying to con him with really dense, heavy cardboard) and closed it up. didnt check anything else at all.

Im going to give it a go with my old 1.8 one

Ive got a P1 vts rack on my 1999 P3 gti-6, pipes are a straight fit and the difference in steering is night and day. Much faster, more direct and pinpoint sharp.

I wasnt expecting such a difference but its very noticable.

Quick question, I've searched a gazillion threads to no avail. Is the Xsara steering rack the same on all the P1 models?

Do Ecp list one specifically for the phase one Vts?, and another for the phase two Vts?, reason is they may just supply one variant which will probably be the 2.6 turns one with the different hose connections to the Gti-6,

Top mod though, very noticeable on roundabouts, no more shuffling of the wheel, I would just source a second hand one, fit new rack ends and track rod ends Smile
