G'day everyone.

Well I'm slightly concerned that my 6 is in trouble haha.

It all started with the oil pressure, handbrake and stop light coming on and off (flashing) when I was driving home. Picture below.

I am now worried and try to get her home. The engine then goes from sounding normal to developing loud tapping sound from the head.

I then shut off the motor as I was concerned about damage, however, it may be to late?

Recent work performed was a timing belt change 2500 Ks ago. It went very well and no tapping after change.

So any ideas? I'm thinking there is minimal oil reaching the top end, failed oil pump possibly? Hopefully the top end isn't too damaged.

The oil is good. Any help and wisdom is appreciated. Need to get her back to life asap.

Dom

It sounds like an oil pressure problem to be honest. Yes

Either a failed pump, a snapped oil pump drive chain or an internal blockage could cause these problems.
However, I suspect the actual issue is the fact that after the cambelt change the crank pulley hasn't been tightened up to the correct torque and therefore the oil pump drive on the crankshaft is slipping. Yes

I see your cars are 1998, and Peugeot didn't change the oil pump drive design until after this which means you will have the older style NOT incorporating a woodruff key drive from the crank, only relying on the pressure from the crank pulley bolt torque.

To remedy this, the crank pulley bolt will need to be removed and then torqued up to the correct tightness, then it should be fine. I just hope that the top end of the engine hasn't suffered too much in the meantime from lack of oil pressure. Wink

How come the crank pulley bolt needs to be removed? Could it not just be properly tightened?

It could be, but it would be adviseable to remove the bolt and clean the threads so that when it's re-installed it can be tightened to the correct torque. Yes

Thanks everyone. Turns out the crank pulley bolt was hand tight. Not sure how this happened as I tightened the s**t out of it, however I didn't use a torque wrench.

Going to use some 243 loctite and a torque wrench and tighten it to 110NM. I have run the car since the incident, a knocking sound was evident, then after about ten minutes of driving all sounds normal. Should I do an oil and filter change? I'm not sure how, but I think severe or any damage has possIbly been avoided. Any advice? Cheers.

Cheers Rich. What is the best way to tighten the crank bolt? Lock the crank pulley or in gear with assistant on the brakes? Cheers

Assistant on the brake pedal with the vehicle in gear. Yes

Don't lock the crank pulley with an 8mm rod to do it, SERIOUS DAMAGE will occur!

No, but I have seen the aftermath of others doing just that. Sad

By using that method, you are relying on an 8mm "pin" sitting inside an aluminium cast casing which will shatter when you try and stop 110nM of force turning the crankshaft with it. Yes
