Just recently the car has been having starting issues, drove it all the way to London so a good long run and when I jumped in the car the next morning I had power to the ancillaries but absolutely nothing when I tried to start her. Not a single turn. Bump started it down the road and its been ok for a week until it happened again this morning.

Its also idling a bit rough sometimes and bogging down, but I think that's the ICV that needs a clean, and I also replaced a blown fuse for the Cigarette Lighter so it might be shorting I guess and the starter solenoid just isn't getting enough juice.

Any ideas or suggestions? First thing I've done is removed the fuse again.

When you tried to crank the engine over did the dashboards lights dim at all?

I suspect the starter has an intermittant fault if you managed to bump start it ok. Check the battery voltage too, it should be around 12.6/7v first thing in the morning. If it's nearer the 12v it's almost goosed. Yes

The dashboard lights don't dim, no.

I think I've worked its the solenoid that is sticking, if it wont turn a quick tap with the hammer seems to release it and then its ok. So will try a new starter motor, can anyone advise as to whether any 306 starter motor will fit, they seem to be the same across the whole 106, 205, 306 range

i know the outputs on some are different (better) like diesel ones. forget which ones exactly but might be worth getting a better one than the gti6 one while you're at it. can't see them all being the same though unless it's the same engine variant like XU

If you want to upgrade it, I would recommend a starter for the XUD engine. Yes

It has more torque and will turn the '6' engine over faster than normal and should start quicker. Wink
