Whilst trying to find the source of a mysterious clunking noise I get from the n/s front wheel , I've somehow managed to burst the inner ds boot. Anyone know how much these are from pug?

Lots, get one from a motorfactor. Avoid stretchy universal fit crap.

They do, also avoid the ones you fit and then have to glue together. Yes

Got a QH one today from my local factor for the princely sum of 6 quid.

Just been reading another couple of threads on this looks a little more complex than I first thought. Any tips on how to stop the collets and roller bearing things from falling off the tripod when I'm twating it with a big hammer?

Unless you are really heavy handed you will be fine, don't forget you will need new clips to refit the outer gator.

i actually 'repaired' a CV boot split with tiger seal and brake cleaner and it's still fine! LOL

when you say the outer gaitor do you mean the wheel side cv joint one? Do I need to take that one off?

Yes

You willl need to remove the outer CV and boot so you can slide the damaged boot off the shaft and the new one on and then slide the outer boot back on and refit the CV. Wink

Getting confused. its the inner n/s boot i'm replacing, the gear box end. I thought the tripod thing had to come off in order to slide the new boot on. Didn't think i had to touch the out cv at all?

I'm under the impression from memory that the inner CV doesn't come apart in order for you to do it that way...

It's so long since I've touched one though that I could be wrong of course. Anyone confirm either way? Unsure

STAN IS WRONG.

The tripod does need to come off to fit the new boot on the inner CV, wrap some tape around the tripod if you want to stop the bits from falling off.

Got driveshaft off eventually.

Right this bit has to come off the shaft like this?



but its got little lugs on the splines like this



I take these will straighten out when it twat lower side with the BFH?

Yes, it needs to come off that way, and then fit back on the same way. Yes

Normally they have a clip which you have to remove before you can get the tripod off, however the lugs you speak of are probably the same thing. Wink

Ok have now removed the tripod, placed the new boot on and rebuilt the shaft. Replced the oil seal, slid the shaft into bothe the diff and the hub.

Trouble is I CANT get the ball joint back in. Ive tried both way s of getting it in( normal splitting at bottom of hub and undoing the 3 bolts that hold it inot the wishbone.

It seems as if the ds is too long. Or it is not going into the diff far enough. The ds measures approx 650mm long now its built back up.

There seems to be a vertical bar just inside the diff about 75mm in should it be there???. Can't get photobucket working just now or i'd show a pic.

Either that or is it possible i've disloged the outer cv slightly hence making the shaft longer.

Supposed to be at a track day tomorrow . HELP

Sorted it. I must of dislodged the cv joint slightly. Smacked it with hammer and the ds shortened by about 10mm.
