I weighed up the pros and cons and decided to do it
this engine is a pig to drive slow or in low revs I.e as a daily
a j4/jp4 is newer,lower miles,more reliable,similar fuel consumption and i can have a diagnostics port wired in.

Good news is the 1.3 will be used properly, in a Rally car.

I have got most bits ready

list of parts-
Proven low mileage J4/ JP4(with J4 internals) engine with new cambelt and service history
unlocked single plug ecu
spliced loom
modified top engine mount cradle to fit around the 16v cam cover.
slimline fan
16v manifold & gasket
16v throttle cable
Clutch kit
induction kit
engine & g.box oil, oil filter
Gearbox oil seals
two new driveshaft hub nuts

pizza and a couple of days off

it will be quicker and more reliable. The engine comes from a reputable supplier I've used twice before with warranty.

big update at the end of the month.

When you get the new top struts and bearings give me a shout I can throw them on in a lunch break at work for you. Am also waiting to hear back about a job at a Peugeot Citroen specialist and they don't mind use of the ramps for private work etc so could make use of that in future Wink.

I have to agree, you kind of think, Is it more special as it is now? Or with a 16v?

Obviously the 1.3 will be less drivable but for me owning a 106 s1 rallye is all about its 'character' and the engine in it now suits it perfectly for that.

Oh job at Peugeot Citroen would be sweet! Good luck with it Pete! Top mounts won't take long will it if I drop the full struts over.

I totally get that the 1.3 does suit the gearbox really well. And the noise is great, sooo revvy and has to be thrashed and driven like it's stolen!

BUT 16ving my last one was the best thing I did. Instantly a lot faster, More reliable and power comes in earlier and has less sensors.
also the 8v is going into a rally car and had been bought by a guy on the Rallye Register so I know it will be appreciated!

I'd keep it 8v if it was a second car!

Sold it because i really wanted a 306 Rallye which imo was a bit of a letdown. I have had 3 1.3 rallyes and two 16v ones and they were miles better as 16v. Anyone who has driven both will have to agree.

16v it mate. characters brilliant, but it's not so brilliant when you've over heated or stalled at a junction and you really feel like a right tit when you've got to get it going again and get to work on time.

otherwise you end up just hating the car and wanting to stack it into a hedge and walk away from it.

Mini update
Callum and i spent most of the day removing engine and gearbox from the 205 Rallye. This was really fun thanks to some stubborn nuts and bolts, nothing a grinder and the special tool (hammer) can't sort.

Pete popped round for a bit in his SC'd 6 and kindly helped me fit the 266mm brakes.
pedal has a little bit more travel but they are noticeably sharper when I stamp the pedal.
Back end gets a little light as Pete noticed when we took it for a blast, came back with an approving smile.

Pics in no particular order

Three great drivers cars, Callum's 6 lurking in the background. Which one would you choose?

fireblade bike carbs for 106/ 205 8v Rallye or Xs for sale too as well as a good working 1.4 205 Rallye lump.

Rubbish pics of my 266s going on. Pretty tight fit!

If in doubt get the grinder out Thumbs up can't believe your not gonna put a deadly engine in that 205 instead of the 1.4 Callum... I'd have a throttle boddied 6 lump in there Big grin

And as Amin said I took his rallye for a spin after fitting the brakes and what a cracking little car! As he said annoyingly gutless at low revs but once she's up there it's like driving a road going go-cart! Big smiles every time Big grin.

Pete and I took a Lil road trip to Pick up a lowish mileage J4 engine with cambelt done.
I think we loved my Rallye gearbox screaming at away for two hours on the motorway!
Big thanks to for coming to along

I have also bought all the other conversion bits, pics to follow.

Within a couple of hours it went from this..

To this

I then managed to snap the connector for the the vacuum pipe off the brake servo., that was the only hickup

Now I'm waiting for the loom to be made and also waiting for a clutch kit and delivery of a 1.4 Xsi gearbox. The Rallye box is fun but toooo short with the 16v. Xsi one is still pretty good nutty.
Old engine, ecu, manifold, inlet and starter motor all palleted ready to be collected by new owner. It's going In a Rallye Rally car so it will be used properly.
Bigger update in a few days.

Today I cleaned and painted engine bay, no more surface or scabby paint. Wasn't too bad, a lot less filth and rust than my other 106s.

Also fitted a new clutch kit and checked out the cambelt too, nice and new.

1.4 Xsi gearbox arrived today, I spent cleaning it and also cleaning the engine block, very pleased with results.

Cheers dude. Pretty obvious what was making that knocking noise, one of the top mounts was just flapping about..
I'll get engine in on my next day off, will be easy with just an engine crane.

Few bits I still need-
Throttle cable to adjust to the correct length
Bonnet latch cable is rusty and corroded
Tray that sits on top of g. Box to then go into gearbox mount wasn't sent with the gearbox and I need that first.

Other than that it all looks plain sailing from here. Loom will be back with me on tues/weds.
