Put some fuel (~20L) into the track car earlier to find that the gauge didn't move, just thought it was very low on fuel when I bought it rather than there being a problem.

Is it just a sensor I need to change?

Check the sender, its built into the fuel pump housing on Ph2 and 3's, and separate on Ph1's. You should check the resistance changes as you move the sender, or just make sure its not stuck. You could just move it by hand and see if the gauge moves too. If not, could be wiring or a dodgy dash.

Taken the sender out and put a voltmeter across it; getting 10v (ish) to the sender. When running a bit of wire from the positive pin to any other pins, the gauge doesn't move on the dash.

Any thoughts?

Sounds like it could be a problem in the instrument panel then. However, 10v to me is a little low to start with. Wink

Have you checked the resistance on the sender as you move the float arm?

Didn't have chance to pull the sender out today, but get to that during the week.

Slight update, replaced the pump unit with a second hand unit from Dan and still no gauge. Also noticed that the dash lights aren't working either.

Am guessing there's a dodgy connection to the clocks so will be checking that out at the weekend.

Hope that just highlights dan as a bad seller.

Are there any issues with swapping instrument clusters from 1 car to the other? Thinking of quickly putting the cluster from the road car into the track car to see if that solves the problem.

Nope, just swap them over. Yes

This problem is still a, errrr, problem? Did a bit more investigation over the weekend and the sender on the pump is working fine so there's another problem elsewhere. I've fixed the dash lights issue (no connection going between the pins on the dash dim plug) so I'm thinking there could be a bigger problem.

When the ECU resets the fuel gauge needle moves and the light goes out (along with all the other needles) before returning to it's zero position. Could it be that the ECU believes there's no fuel in the tank and thus is sending that to the gauge?

Well there goes that plan! Is it the dash itself resetting then rather than the ECU (causing the dials to move)?

Other options must be either a dodgy dash or broken wiring somewhere.

Still a bit stumped as to what's causing this. Sender is outputting a value that changes based on position so that seems to be working fine.

Does anyone have a diagram of the clock connectors so I can check what value is being sent to the clocks? See if it's the clocks broken or a bad connection somewhere.

I appreciate the age of the thread so this is a long shot. Do your time clock, rev counter and mileage display work?

If not, check fuse 25 I think it is. This has killed my fuel gauge off twice already in my Rallye.

Regardless, wiring diagram are in the FAQ. I was looking at these previously.

Fixed it in the end, turned out to be the clock unit was broken. Got a replacement set of clocks and the gauge works fine!

This is a very good call, saves you bags of time checking fuses first. Smile

On the old clocks everything was working except the fuel gauge and possibly odometer back light
