The dowels are only for alignment, if they're letting your gearbox bolts come loose then the box was already moving anyway (I.E. Bolts already loosening).

If it's running rich have you checked the plugs + filter, especially with that power loss?

I've had a few 205 and 306s with no dowels in and the bolts coming undone. Fitted new dowels and bolts and has been fine. They take alot of stress off a bolt too.

They're a split dowel, they won't take any real loading unless the face is already slipping (which means the bolts are already loose)

they may only be for alignment, but they do come loose without them in place...

maybe the input shaft being offcentre introduces a vibration and a rotational force on the bellhousing that makes them come loose?!

Oil filter was done in January, about 60 miles ago. I've not done the fuel filter in a while thinking about it, probably worth doing that.

WP, to separate the box I still need to drop the fluid, remove N/S driveshaft, undo the mount, lower it all enough to actually move the box out enough. A couple of hours of work that I don't have time for!

If it's rotating, the bolts are already coming loose. The only way it would make a difference would be if you were missing enough that the gearbox was no longer going up square so the input shaft wasn't true to the crank, then the extra vibration would loosen things. Either way, they still don't take any loading.

Don't worry dan. I put my repaired gearbox in last Wednesday evening. Then had to take it out again on the thursday! So at least your getting more use out of it than that!

I can get the car from 4 wheels on the floor to box on the floor in dead on an hour now it's so regular!

I took the box out 2 weeks ago to put a new clutch in. Then took it out again 5 days ago to replace that clutch for another new one, I've done it enough recently! I would fix it and have ordered the parts to do it but I have a huge list of other stuff that needs doing first.

I'll threadlock the remaining bolts and check they're all still present during and after quali.

Success! It survived the weekend and ended up with a reasonable result (before a stupid penalty anyway). Few issues cropped up, mainly with engine running which I'll start a dedicated thread for, but otherwise everything survived. I did manage to shear the bleed screw on the thermostat housing though, resulting in a bit of a bodge but it worked Smile Also got an issue with the rear tyres rubbing on the inner arch which they haven't before. I'm planning on getting some camber put on the rear anyway so this will be more of a problem in future. I think the best way to solve this is to see if I can get the arch moved inward a bit.

It was such a stupid thing. Wasn't really paying attention then I thought "this seems to go further than normal" then snap. Luckily I found a bolt in a random collection of stuff in the truck that fitted (after being cut down) and away I was. I'll buy another, proper bleed screw again though, just to be safe.

Axle isn't a bad shout, I'll have a look.

I don't want to space the rear at all, would rather have the arches moved than push the wheels out.

Nope, completely standard other than new TBs and ARB. I'm slowly rebuilding a spare axle to fit with new bearings, shafts etc. so maybe I should speed that up a bit!

Plan is to move to a 30mm ARB with 0 toe and 2 degrees of camber. I'm still uncertain of the camber value, maybe 2.5 degrees. I need to look in to how that will change the car's handling.

camber specifics wont alter handling that much, it will effect how it works the tyres, that's what will determine the camber you need.

toe has more of a direct effect on turn in and stability, touring cars ran a significant amount of toe out, many people can't handle them!

Yea I'm not brave enough for big amounts of toe out, 0 should be enough for me! Good point about camber, I run 2.5 up front so maybe 2 at the rear will be better

205/50/16 DZ03Gs. More camber will potentially give me more arch issues but maybe the beam fix will help that

A lot of the massive toe out on touring cars is to help generate heat in the rear tyres, not so much of an issue on anything short of full race slicks.
