Chaps,

Need to draw on your expertise...Today I was letting the car tick over then took it for a quick spin up and down the road (like 5 seconds) I then decided to turn on the fan and smoke came out the vents so worried me and pulled back onto the drive. any ideas what would cause that.

just to note the car has been sitting in my garage for 6 year with very intermittent starting and had it pass it MOT last week then done about 25 miles. I am planning to do an oil change very soon but want to know is it just the oil change that will resolve this or more damage done ?.

Smoke as blow out the dust last week while driving around. I think it is sucking it from the engine.

If you think it is smoke, look at the engine bay and see if there is visible smoke.

I'd imagine it's just dust and broken down leaves which are being blown through. Clear out the scuttle panel area to the fan box. You'll soon see if there's a load of crap going down in there.

Just run the engine on idle for a while and shine a light behind and around the engine and look for any dust. Could be something burning off the manifold perhaps.

Just a quick thought i had intermittent starting problems and smoke caused by a bad earth on the gearbox. It was arcing which made it very hot and smokey. Might be worth a look/clean up of the earths...

It was a nice warm evening and the only thing I did do was top up the rad and fit a new radiator cap purchased from Halfords.

Heater matrix is behind the dash it's where the engine coolant flows through, then air is blown through and you get hot air inside the car, that's when you select hot on the heater controls, this opens a flap and
Directs the outside air through the heater matrix heating up the air.

There's also another for the air con that goes cold like a fridge from the air con gas flowing through it, same again air is blown through when the flaps are on cold and when the aircon is turned on and if it works you get cold air.

If your matrix is foobarred, it's about £50 give or take for a new one and takes about 4 hours to do if you have done it before, If not it will take maybe up to 12, but after you will think "that wasn't too bad after all"

    Is your windscreen steaming up?
Is your coolant going down, even slowly?
Does the car smell of hot coolant or like a burnt coffee smell?
