Hi all.

The Rallye has been making a popping / knocking noise from the passenger side suspension and I think it's the top mount? It's prevalent when turning the wheel while the car is stationary and has now become louder while driving normally.

A garage has suggested it's the top mount, does this sound likely?

when stationary and going from lock to lock, do you get a 'twanging' noise? if yes, then most

likely will be top mount or rather, the bearing which will have dried out/seized

Are the three bolts that hold it in tight enough (not too tight though). Maybe been overtightened in past and threads stripped?

As it is doing it when stationary get someone to turn the wheel while you listen with bonnet open.

also check for broken coil spring, although you'd notice the car sitting lower on one side

worth a look all the same, jack front of car up, turn wheels through lock by hand, ie, actually grab road wheel

and move it through its full travel

The symptoms do indeed describe a typical top mount on its way to failing. Yes

Cheers guys Smile

Any recommendation on what to do? I'm not really looking at replacing the struts / springs as well but there are any recommended, cheap-ish kits then I could be interested.

Depends how much you want to spend really mate, Spax do a good kit, 40mm lowered comes with new rear shocks as well for around the £350 mark...I had this kit for years, really recommend it. Yes

The only thing is you will then need to lower the rear 40mm to match. Wink

Always been a fan of Spax, hmmmm. Might just get a new set of top mounts onto the stock suspension.

If it turns out to be the top mount causing the issue, then you could just replace the mounts for now and think about upgrading to a different suspension package in the future. The only downside to that is that you have to do the job twice in effect if you pull it all apart now and then do the same later on down the line to install the new setup. Smile

True but I'm trying to save money on the road car and thus don't want to modify it too much.

If its not the topmount, check the steering rack if it's tightned enough.

I had some knocking as well and it helped by tightening the steering rack.
