After these comments I got a bit worried so I just went outside to check. Looks like I got it wrong and they actually saved the matrix heater pipe worth £120! But I'm not sure where they got the tube which is now being used to bypass the system from.

Yes, that's a much better way of doing it...

I was also surprised that a garage would have done that as well. LOL

Hi mate, a bit of a nightmare just lately, one thing after another. I had the car booked in for a service this morning but when I went to start it, it just wouldn't fire up. It kind of sounded like it was going to but then it just died out. Yesterday I topped the rad up and took it for a 30 min drive with no problems, but the today the rad water was down pretty low again.

The garage towed it and checked the compression as we all suspected the head gasket might be gone.

I just got a call and they said the compression is fine, which was a relief. They said the spark plugs where looking old/black so they will replace them and they would put some of that stuff in the rad to block any small holes.

Do you think old plugs would cause these start up issues?

I'm still confused about the water level though. It seems to go down after using th car and I cant see any visible leaks from the rad. Before the matrix went it would hold water fine. Yet now the matrix should be out the equation because it's obviously been by passed. Unsure

I was going to say I bet it's pressurising if it's still going down with no obvious leaks or even if it's sprouted a leak elsewhere.
did they test it while it was hot or cold, I think they're ment to do it when it's at proper temp, I'm sure somebody will say that's bo***cks though LOL

Head gasket or cracked head (although the cracked head is rare).

Water is being consumed by the engine somewhere, and if not into the oil, must be leaking straight into the combustion chamber and being burnt off when running.

Either that or you have an infestation of microscopic water theiving Ants that drink the lifeblood of your car when its cold, then scuttle off in the night engorged with antifreeze and water

Drove it home from the garage no problem at normal temps. Going to keep a close eye on the rad water. If it is the gasket, how much in total should a repair be from a garage?

I'm in Essex. A new engine is an option though I currently have almost zero mechanical knowledge or tools...

Good point. I did a 20 min drive yesterday and after it had cooled I checked the rad. I was pleased to see there was no water loss.

However, now I have another problem. The car now won't start. Yesterday I managed to get it going on the second attempt [the first time it kind of sounded like it was going to start then it just dyed out]

A few days ago I came to a junction and the car stalled, and when I started it that day the engine diagnostics light came on briefly. I got it started while being towed.

Do you think this could be the Crank Sensor?.....but I'm not sure if it would have started from being towed if it really was the sensor..

Crank sensors tend to either work or not to be honest...
The fact that it started up and then the EML came on points to another potential issue. Now you have no coolant loss, that's a very good sign to be fair as the engine obviously isn't drinking it.

It could be a sensor, or a potential wiring fault. My guess is on a sensor, possibly the cam sensor as this is only used for starting. Wink
