Author Subject: 406 V6 Brembo fitting Queries

Hi all,

I appreciate there are a lot of threads on this, as I have tried to wade through as many as posisble before asking questions. Could some one just quickly confirm the following:

1. Are the 406 v6 calipers a direct fit to the gti6 hub, or do they require brackets to be made up?
2. Do the 406 v6 discs fit, or is the '4-pot fitting kit' required?
3. What size discs are usually run on these? I will be using 17" alloys, so shouldnt have any issues with caliper clearance, but obviously, I assume mounting the caliper to the hub with no bracket will limit the max. disc diameter I can run.

I'm sure these questions have been asked before, I just can't seem to find, so any advice/help would be appreciated Smile

Ed I know why your asking this mate. Would help if you were potentially buying 406 calipers instead of fiat coupe ones.

Niall, I know already thanks, I've been in discussions with the vendor you're thinking of and am fully aware they are Fiat Coupe ones. I'm now looking at potential alternatives which don't involve fabrication of custom brackets (and therefore further expense!)

Might sell my engine 'box & lightened fly soon to fund the next bits Ninja


Welshpug! Thanks mate Smile I did do a search though! I spent most of yesterday trawling through threads about brembos, but plenty of people seem to be fitting ash's big brake kit for 310mm discs, so I got a bit confused!!

Are the xantia/c5 discs properly heavy? Are there any lighter alternatives without going for ash's kit?

@ Russbez, I know you are! I'm watching it, but I'm just about to go on holiday, so definitely can't afford it just yet! Need to see where I am after I get back on 3 July!

I will most certainly be in touch if I can afford them then though! just doing the research now, so if I can do it, i'll be on em straight away Smile

Ed the brembo kit that you know of for sale weighs more than a small heard of elephants (do elephants come in heards?). I was genuinely shocked at how heavy they were.

See conversely I was surprised at the weight of the GTi6 set-up; when I had a heft of the Brembo calipers, they seemed pretty close to the weight of the gti6 calipers.

Daveyboy, does the overall increase in unsprung weight have any noticable affect on turn-in?

No, not really, as you say the calliper is lighter but that is more than offset by THS incteased disc weight. However, if you can't scrub off enough speed on corner entry you will never make the turn in point anyway. Therefore I would get the Brembos and look to save weight on wheels and tyres.

On the offchance, I don't suppose you know the weight of a 17" Speedline DeCorse Turini in 306 fitment with tyre? Are they lighter than a cyclone & 50-profile?

:roll Thanks Welshpug; I'm a firm believer that a decent set of pads and good brake fluid will be more than adequate for certainly a stock power '6, however I'm looking at the possibility of fitting bigger brakes as I am hoping to track the car a fair bit next year, and want a bit more stopping power.

That and I'm a bit of a tart, and want some bigger brakes to fill up my new alloys. they aren't currently essential, but it pays to do the research well in advance of parting with any cash, hence the thread Smile

Even 17's you need to watch out for, most list them not suitable for the couple V6

But the std 305mm discs will not fit on a std hub, the 406 hub is a different offset

should be ok on a 306 though as they do have an offset where the 406 has almost zero offset on the disc, always close though.

I have always wondered if there is a bigger disc than the xsara v6 288mm disc that will fit with 406 v6 brembos when they are bolted to the gti6 hub?

Just to resurrect an old thread a minute. If I'm buying the calipers from the v6 coupe, and the calipers only am I gonna need to buy fresh pads I take it? And to confirm these are definite direct fit? And finally will they actually make a difference on standard sized '6 discs as I'm not convinced the bigger discs and calipers will fit under my 15s?

You will need new pads and yes they are a direct fit to the hub although you will need to check whether or not they fit under your 15" wheels - they definitely don't fit under cyclones without some ridiculous spacers.

You'll need minimum of 10-12mm spacers to fit under cyclones.
They are direct fitment using the the 288mm citroen xantia v6 discs. They WILL squeal like a pig unless you use the tarox g88 discs which are pretty expensive and a set of good pads will help. They would benifit from braided braided brake lines too. But... They do make a difference to maximum braking force. Although I found that driving around normally they feel a little vague until a good amount of presser is applied. Then they stop well. They run extremely wide and even my 17's are extremely close to them. I like them tbh though and for a budget brake set up you can't really go wrong.
