Having owned various 306's for about 4 years now i'm getting a small itch for something different, life is short and there are already mutterings of expensive things like mortgages and marriages from the other half.

I'm not really interested in much over 200bhp and would rather have a rewarding and engaging driving experience when driving down the favourite roads on a quiet Sunday morning.

I'm not much of a mechanic and it will be a daily driver so whatever I go for must be reliable. Budget is around £3k

E30 BMW - Undecided on 318is or 325i.
Pro's
- reliable?
- love the retro styling
- rwd (keen to see what all the fuss is about)
- easy to work on?
- will probably appreciate in value if I get a good one

Cons
- Old, I imagine a lot of money will need to be spent if it hasn't already on suspension + general wear and tear of a 22 year old car.
- Certain parts getting rare?
- 318is slightly underpowered

Integra DC2
Pro's
- lively engine
- reliable
- championed for handling
Con's
- ?

Looks like Integra is winning at the moment, but I do love the look of the E30. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

cheers
Lewis

I owned a E30 325i some 14 years ago - was a hoot, pretty quick sounded lovely with a full mongoose and the back would step out all over the place! As for the cost etc bits were not to bad ie from motor factors/ breakers etc but back then they were not particularly rare - god know what it will be like now.....

Integra - never owned one but have driven a few - amazing car when in the mood for a blast but day to day not so sure.

Out of your 2 choices the DC2 would get my vote.

318is is meant to be the E30 bar an M3/320ish. 142 from the m42 isn't exactly mega, but not bad, should have an LSD as standard but a lot are missing them. They looks cool and drift well, i love E30's.

Integra's are a very good car, bomb proof, quick, awesome handling, not many downsides, bar it looks like a shoe.

e30 318is + engine swap.

You can drop a HELL of a lot of very interesting beemer engines in them with zero fuss or hassle.
The e36 m3 engines for instance :O

The issue with doing that is they say the IS is the most balanced E30 due to the lighter engine up front, again, bar the M3/320IS, so you'd have to watch engine weights IMO. vauxhall LET would be a sweet conversion.

I wouldnt personally wnt a DC2 after owning a decent hot hatch, The power delievery means it will only really feel much faster when you are slamming it to the red line. And its not enough of a step up imo. Plus the back end looks very dated now imo and hasnt aged will, the arches are flat as hell and the lights way too big.
As an aside they are worth way way too much for what they are too..

Obviously though you would do it all properly, Insuring to be intelligent about how its sprung etc.
Besides the suspension set up is the same as the m3 no?

I believe it is on the IS, not positive though, 325i sports are lovely, but they are commanding daft money lately.

4-cylinder BMWs FTMFF.

It's also worth noting that no engine swap is "zero hassle". LOL

ive owned a dc2 and wow what a car, handles amazingly well, but as someone said before it is a bit raw for every day use

for 3k you would get a dc2 that would need rebushing, your better off with the later 98 spec cause those are better equipped and look better

I bought the inlet and itb's from Toby, the rest is my creation. It's been ppc this year and last.

It's 3.5l with M6 itb's, super t70 turbo, custom inlet ex mani and full 3" system with tial 46mm external. Omex 710 with launch and antilag, 5 speed close sport box with 3,15 ratio LSD, etc the list goes on. 356 at the wheels for now at 10psi.

possibly a bit more, but then again the only thing i had to change were belts, water pump and clutch, but not enough to put you in a coma, just stay away from all the brand names lol

    Yes

    Straight 6, V8, V10, V12 or GTFO

Always liked the E34 5 Series. The E24 635CSi is a worthy steed too.

I think I'm right in saying the only acceptable 4-cylinder BMW is the S1000RR.
