i need to know what other people are getting on start up cold. start warm. cold idle. warm idle. and warm pressure from 1krpm to 2krpm and 2k to 4krpm and 4krpm to 6krpm.

when my car is started cold its normally about 4-5bar cold idle at start up. an warm idle at 2bar. which i think is a little low. but soon as you get revs moving its up to 4bar at any where from 2.5krpm. and today when i had to car nice an hot. the pressure was just below 2bar so i was worried as iv just done an engine change after big end bearing so im paranoid over loosing pressure. could someone shed some light on to my problem.

crank pulley bolt was fitted 150miles ago to 95ft_lb with loctite so i doubt thats come loose.
sump was removed and washed. so i know thats clean.
filter that was fitted wasnt a pug one but still had the little valve thing in the bottom of the filter.
im using castrol magnatec 10-40w as im told this is ok for it.

is this going to be a case of remove sump and change oil pressure spring?

no one? well i went out for a drive in the car. the oil pressure never rises above 4bar even at 5k+ rpm. get 4 bar oil pressure about 2.2 to 2.5k rpm. whats wrong with this thing. getting a bit fed up. going to drop the sump tomorrow take the oil pump off and change the pump spring.

I wouldn't take it apart just yet, get a proper oil pressure test done.

The spring is rated at 6 bar anyway...

2 bar for a warm idle is about right. Yes

6 bar @ 4k rpm is the ideal on a good engine.

right this morning my mate said he would drive me to work. so thought i would just see what she does on a cold start. 5.9 bar. so i drove to work about 3miles to work low speed a few traffic lights on the way takes 10-15min an just as i got to work the temp is about 85c an oil at 2bar. rev'd an jumped to 4 bar an did go past 4 bar too on higher revs.

yesterday i couldnt get past 4 bar even at plus 5krpm. now i know the guage aint dodgy because yester when it was at 1.9bar hot i could hear the tappets so they aint getting enough oil ( there all clean an free, checked on build.)

so have i got a worn out pump so its not creating enough pressure when warm or is something else at play.

1.9 on idle is ok, try different oil.

low oil pressure warning is at 1 bar.

I've had exactly the same problem on mine (ok it's a diesel) recently, whereby even when up around 5krpm it wouldn't make any more than 3bar hot.

6bar spring, and new oil pump and it's up over 4bar hot at 5krpm... and it's got 120k on that motor!

That's fine, when the oil is thin and flowing freely you won't get the oil pressure much above 3 bar, mine used to sit at nearer 1 bar at idle after coming in from track. Basically as the oil gets hotter, the oil pressure will drop. You don't need massive oil pressure, just consistent oil pressure.

The better the oil you buy, the more consistent the oil pressure will be from my experience... I'm not a fan of Castrol in all honesty - mostly down to the fact they shove it in 4l bottles knowing that most cars hold about 5l...

But they big up the oil and give them fancy containers, but it's still a pretty poor semi-synthetic. I've found with my car that the quality of the oil is quite important to much it resists changing viscosity with extremes of temperature - the poorer the oil quality, the less pressure when hot as it's so much thinner.

I've always heard 1bar of oil pressure for every thousand RPM is within tolerance when at normal operating temp... How much I'd listen to that I don't know...

It seems these engines only sit up against the 6bar regulator on cold idle, once warm, they're nowhere near - so on XUDs and other XUs that use the lower pressure spring, it'll really only make a difference on idle when cold...
