hi,

just after some advice on my stupidity,
stupidly on my way to work this morning i had to go through a bit of flooded road maybe a foot deep and being half asleep didnt spare a tought about the induction kit beind down near the bumper it's a piperx on the standard intake,
anyway i was going through steady and 3/4 of the way through the car died completley.

i managed to roll out of the other side onto the road again but it wouldnt turn over at all, then slowly it started cranking over and eventually fired up and ran the 10mile journey to work fine and home again with no issues

so when i got back home i took the induction kit off and it was soaked through and dripping water out alot. so i put the standard box on to save it happening again but am after peoples thoughts as to if any damage could have been done already or how long it could take to rear it's head??

sorry for the long winded version

any advice would be gladly taken

cheers

If it had sucked up a lot of water into the engine and tried to compress it you would have bent conrods and the engine wouldnt have started again. It will probably be fine.

cheers for the reply mate, i wondered that because the car cut out the air filter had gone right into the water and stopped it drawing any air in hence cutting out, i took 1 of the oil breather hoses off the 1 with the round black box on and a fair bit of water ran out of that and theres a bit of milky residue inside the hose and the oil filler cap which wasnt there a few days ago, which made me thought that some had got into the engine,
is it possible for it to have drawn any in but still run ok for now?

probably starved it of air to be honest.

if it had taken in water i think it would now be a dead engine.

hopefully ive got lucky then,
only other thing was when it fired up it teamed white smoke out but i guessed that when the engine dies the water must have gone up the exhaust from the backbox and it was the water being evapourated, does that sound like a possible thing to happen, anyway i was thinking it might be a good idea to change the oil at the weekend,
is there anything else i should look out for in the near future?

Sounds like you got lucky. When they ingest enough water they stop and never normally run again. Does it tickover even, no hint of a misfire at all? If it does, i'd leave it alone.

Reason i ask, back in the mid 90's one of my company car drivers did the same in a Cavalier 1.7td, after it conked out it restarted and ran ok, however it always had an unsteady tickover and smoked a bit more on boost. When it failed the first MOT on excessive emmisions, the techs removed the head and one rod was bent! All because of the water. It had done 60k since it happened LOL

yeah it ticks over as it always had and it's always had a slight misfire since i've had it.

for example if your accelerating fully its fine, just occurs when i sit at say 60 in 6th for a while then put my foot down it' hesitant for a few seconds then picks up and goes. i was going to get a new lambda sensor to hopefully cure it

Would it be worth doing an oil change totally drain the engine to see if there's any water in there?
For the £20 it costs for the oil worth a shot to keep your engine?

What this thread needs is the OP to start a Poll to ascertain people's expectations of the longevity of the engine going forward.
