now, after having the car for 15 months or so, i understand that there is a small hydrolic ram/piston thing to
prevent the wheel from hitting the gearbox...

well... mine is not doing that, had my passengers side wheel off and i have a nice polished bolt on the end of the gearbox and a small groove worn in my brand new tyre.

what can i do to sort this??

cheers

It may help, but i'd make sure your tracking is right, with almost equal adjustment on both tres

Just because your wheels are in track doesn't mean the rack is centred, if you get me. Say both wheels are actually pointing 2 degrees to the right, they're technically parallel but the ends of your steering rack will be in the wrong place Yes

as mentioned, most tracking monkeys just tweak one side disregarding the effects it has on a car with relatively precise steering like a pug.

also, it could well be that your PAS ram has been replaced at some point with a standard unit which does not limit r/h lock.

Or you are using wider wheels / tyres, or the brake discs aren't quite as thick. Could be engine mounts are worn too. All sorts!

Mine used to do the same thing on standard everything too.

I'm running 17 x 7 wheels and tyres and don't have this issue.

As stated, check the threads on both TREs and make sure they are pretty equal. I take it the car drives in a straight line to start with?
