Set myself a budget of £1000 to get a fun car I can use for 4 months before I hopefully go travelling, then either sell it before I go or leave it at my mums to rot.

Was originally after a Phase 1 GTI 6, but can’t find one so started looking at other things.

Things I’ve considered are Mk1 MX-5’s, MR2’s, 106 GTI, Saxo VTS etc but I haven’t seen anything I’m tempted to go and look at yet.

I’m 23 and don’t want to pay out of my arse for insurance and its more important that the car is fun than fast so that rules out Impreza turbo’s etc.

There is one car I’ve seen fairly locally which looks pretty cool but I know nothing about them and would be worried that it may be financial suicide.

Clicky

Suggestions?

1994 one should be REv3 too. they dont handle that great though. And there is a relatively common pipe issue with mr2 that means you need to get the engine out just to sort it. Which is a pain. I was looking at them ages ago before i got a 6
I'd get a 6 tbh

Both cheap and really handle well.

MX5, never owned one but test drove several and there awesome, very slow and the brakes are naff but it doesn't matter, they just have the right feeling. Also RWD = FUN!

I just needed a bit more practicality, the 6 is defiantly a better all round car but would still like to have an MX5 at some point

Don't need practicality at all. TBH i want something a little bit silly, also been lookin at volvo T5's but really dont think i could get a decent one for a grand.

    Something like this then?

    MX5

Manual sports aren't easy to find. I shouldn't of sold mine really. Was Diamond Schwartz with a couple of previous owners from one family and a list of extras as long as your arm. Electric everything. 167k miles, but drove really well.

Like most BMWs, great value for a buyer but not a seller.

Funnily enough a lad i know is selling an E34 530i. Apparently its low mileage and very tidy. Can't say it looks that fun though, looks like a bit of a boat to me.

edit> just spent 10 mins looking for the link to it and my ebay messages but it's vanished completely, god knows, it was alright other than absolutely GASH wheels on it. manual etc. nice. it was at a garage in Cheadle if anyone can find it

Has yours got half the grip left from where you used it as a chisel? Perhaps I could send you the piece that snapped off so we are forever friends?

They are out there, but unless you buy one with half decent suspension the fun will be limited to sounding nice and smoking the front tyres.

Look at S70s as they are generally the cheapest. 850s tend to hold their value better. Tuning for any 850 platform cars is fairly cheap, except anything after 1998 with ME7 management. I've seen S70s with a reliable 300BHp, good suspension etc go for £1000 - 1200.

If it was me i'd be going small engined and low grip.

All the drifty boys are loving Mk1 MX5's at the moment, they are surprisingly quick round a track. I recvently bought a 328i for buttons, its a good laugh but not really a weapon. Smile

Was thinking about getting a 328i sport before I decided to go away. Wouldn't say no to a normal coupe if i can find a tidy one in budget.
