Today after driving alomg my engine decided it was a good idea to eat itself!!

Think its chewed at least the big end up and probably more. Its a phase 3 china on an x plate and 126k miles and all around in good condition.

Carl from leicester did a fab job as always repairing it before i bought it from his 20 months ago. Think it had a catastrophic oil leak and bang went the engine!

For all you "6" lovers out there, advice please. Im loathed to break it but dont think i have the money to repair her.

Andrew

Was on my way to carls after hearing a slight tapping to get him to look at it. Had suspicions it may be engine related but still drove it like a t##t. Ive got very little money and dont want to throw good money after bad. Carl said hes got an engine, but still going to cost me to get it put in

If I were in your position I would break it to get some money and save for another one. As you said you don't think you will have the money to repair it.
Its only a car really. And 6's are going for peanuts now.

Do you not know anyone that can do it with you?

It's only basic disassembly and the use of an engine crane. I appreciate you may not be confident in doing it, but you can't really go wrong having a go at removing the old lump.

I wouldnt break it, if its well maintained otherwise it is worth fixing it. 2nd hand engines ain't that expensive and if needs must fit it yourself. Its a learning curve thats worth it. My birds zx threw its timing belt and I was toying with binning it but other than the engine it was good so me and pete26 (we'd only ever done the arb links and services) set about stripping it down and rebuilding it. 25k miles later its stol good for the grand ol cost of £180.

By breaking it you would still have to remove the engine. Thats half way to fixing it... Smile

If you have access to a crane, and a decent socket set so you aren't rummaging for tools, there is no reason you can't have it out, in and finished and done within a short lazy day. Loom unplugs at the lower right hand side. Clip that up out the way and then drain fluids and sort the hoses and cables for clutch, reverse, throttle, pop gear linkages off etc etc and your then only a few large bolts away from lifting it out. If it is connected from the engine to something else , chase it and remove it. Obviously leave the gearbox on and swap that over out of the car to make it easier. Driveshafts are removeable without taking the hubs off the shocks. You aren't in a rush. Take your time and ask away on here if you get unsure on anything.

I was squeezing a GTi6 lump out and back in my 205 in 15-20 mins. That's purely just off the mounts and out, then back in on the mounts, but has to go in at a specific angle to miss the chassis rail, master cylinder and not foul against the headlight panel on the way down. Did it several times in one day before. All to fine tune the exhaust manifold angle. Going back in you remember what size sockets you need for what mounting so it's quicker.

The 306 bay will always look huge now in comparison.
