I am getting a knock on the near side when going over bumps.

I also noticed a knock when going from lock to lock. Does this point to top mount bearings?

That could be a spring either on its way out or not seating properly.

Smeagal I've had the same for about 15k. I've pretty much decided its the beam mounts. But I'm getting a new beam soon anyway... but mine sounds like its the rear

Mine has a rebuilt beam on solid mounts so shouldn't be that.

Top Mount bearings or gearbox mount could be another culprit. However, out of the two options I would suspect the bearings. Yes

That is good and bad news. For some reason I had suspected the GB mount. What makes that more likely as well, is that the top mount is chocked, the bottom is group-N and the GB mount is 14 years old.

i had the same problem after i lowered my car with coilovers. The back of the bottom connection of the drop links was catching on the suspension arms. Spent about 2mins with a file on each plastic droplink and the noise stopped.

By having that setup, you are putting even more strain on the already aged and standard GB mount...Yes

I would personally change it just for the peace of mind that its done and see if your noise disappears. It may not be that, but at least once you've changed it you know it will be good for a while yet. Smile

The GB mount looks pretty easy too. Will get it done when I get a chance.

Thanks

It should take you about 15 mins to change Craig...Yes

Then you can eliminate it out of the equation.

I've tracked down the part. I'll either fit it or get it fitted after next week as I am off skiing.

I am loathe to pay someone to do such an easy job, but I don't have my tools with me and the petrol to drive home or to my old uni is more than it is likely to cost to get it fitted.

The more I listen, the more I hope that the GB mount alone will sort it.

Ok, good luck with it. Like you say its a shame to have to pay out for that but hopefully it will solve the problem. Yes

They are rose jointed with reasonably new joints. My next point of call will be ARB bushes.

Thanks for your advice, Stan and others.

I did the gearbox mount yesterday and the knock has gone.

Just to add to this thread rather than create a new one:

I have developed a single knock recently which occurs when reversing out of parking spaces mostly.

If I reverse out of a parking space to my left, as I over come the inertia to drive forward and go from left lock to right, I'll get a clunk/knock.

Is this likely to be springs?, ball joints?

Drop links are fairly new, so I'll rule them out for time being (although i'm just listing my basic knowledge of suspension here so it's probably nowt to do with anything)

Any ideas? please

Is it only apparant when you are moving backwards and then want to go forwards? Or can you get this knock if you are stationary and you turn the steering wheel?

Erm I'll say yes for the time being, only apparent when going forward after having travelled backwards.

I don't tend to just turn the wheels while stationary so couldn't rule it out, but i haven't noticed the noise while say turning after sitting at a junction??

Check the top engine mount cradle isn't cracked. Sounds like it could be to me. Sad

support the engine, remove the mounting arm, remove the engine mounting and look at the cradle part attached to the inner wing.
