The last two mornings my Rallye starts and runs on 3 cyliners for a minute or so. Sounds like a tractor. I've then let it warm up and it runs fine. Im sure its not the injectors or the injectors loom because it won't do it when its warm.
Any ideas?
I have a new lambda sensor going on and waiting for a new coolant temp sensor and map sensor.
This 3 cylinder business is a mystery to me!

more than likely the HG starting to fail. it'll be seeping in overnight or when left for a bit and the misfiring is it clearing the water at which point it'll run fine (because it's hot). i would do a leakdown test on it. had this on probably 3 of the 306's i've had and it's always been the start of the HG failing unfortunately. hardly a mystery LOL

Just had it back from KrisB. I had it to him for possible headgasket and he said it just had a big airlock and new thermostat needed.
It also hesitates/flatspot/ Misfire in higher revs (4k+) when warm.

Check coilpacks and plugs mate, sounds like you could have a dodgy one in there.

coil issues are more likely to occur when warm/hot than cold, then when they go finally they just die totally.

whip the plugs out and stick up a pic Thumbs up

would still err towards a gasket though if it does it from cold.

If the coils and plugs are all good after checking, then I too vote for HG. Sad

With roland in this...did all the above on my last china...then it airlocked and finally blew the hg....sniff test it...

Sniff test is all fine and compression was spot on less than a week ago.. I have it booked in to find out what it is on Friday. I'll check the plugs tomorrow.
Also seems to have a lot of moisture out of the exhaust,even when warmSad
I am not living for the 306. It lives to bend me over and raid my bank account!

Mine didnt show up on compression test or sniff despite exact same symptons. Changed all the same things you have then on the motorway it started running like crap looked in rear view mirror to see clouds of smoke... Rolled off motorway let it cool opened rad and it took about 2 litres of water and drove fine the last 10miles home. Sniffed it again and it was gone.

Well its on the drive now. Will see if new coolant temp sensor,map sensor and lambda sensor makes any difference on thurs before it goes off to a garage on Fri morning.
Wouldn't it be cheaper to source and fit a new engine if it is headgasket?

IMO I would do the gasket, you never know the condition of a donor engine really.

Gasket would cost about £350 all in roughly if I do it.

£350 is about the going rate. You won't buy a second hand engine for cheaper than that really, and even if you found one as Mei says you don't know its history or condition. Best option is replacing the HG and then back to happy motoring!

mine cost 700 quid in the end what with the cambelt mis fitting incident so mei's rate is very reasonable. might even get the belt done properly too.

May be worth having a light skim on the head aswell if you are doing the gasket

£350 was inc a skim+pressure test, bolts and gasket, two cam seals and a timing belt as I was told it was not particularly old and the pulleys would be fine.

If a full kit was to be fitted look nearer £400 Smile

oh and I forgot I did the oil+filter+coolant as well, plus plugs at £12 on top of the £350.

basically, circa £100 for bits, £100 for skim+pressure test, £150 labour.

Belt,waterpump and tensioner were done less than 5k miles ago according to receipts so less to spend there. Awww I got a 306 because its newer, more comfy,safer and quick. All its done is act up and is slower than my old 106. You can guess what my next car will be again.

cool, you'd be looking nearer £350 then.

If done properly a 106 will not be quicker unless its a stripped track shed, my gti6 powered ZX matched a cammed 106 gti till 3rd gear easily, then mullered it till we spotted an unmarked car Laugh my ass off


oh and that was when it was doing the same as this, cold start misfire LOL

The 106 was pretty light and pulled hard with the 1.3 box. Definitely 'felt' quicker because of the light rattly feel. mind you,it had a lot of fast road mods compared to the near standard 306. The 306 is far more composed and i find I don't notice how well it goes until I look at the speedo! I do really like it but its just messing me around so much.I'll send you a pm on Friday and we can sort something then.

mate sounds like your having a bad time, but keep the faith with the 306 trust me you wont like going back to a 106. Get the H/G done then enjoy her !
