Hi,

So got round to running the GTI-6 on the dyno yesterday, and found it's pretty down on power. It ran 149.9hp and 140lbft of torque and while the power was fine up to about 5000rpm, after that it dropped off a bit and got flat.

I've attached two graphs. 1 with the power and torque, 1 with the wheel power and AFR, wondered if there's any common stuff to look at? I know the XUD's inside out, but don't really know my way around an GTi lump.

I've changed the oil as I thought it was wise, but I haven't got round to doing the plugs / filters etc as it's just been too bloody cold.

hmm, afr's look ok afaik, torque and peak power exactly where they should be, which gear was it done in?

barhh if I'd have know another 6 was going I'd have made more of an effort,..
and get a better idea if it's you that's down or if it's the Dyno it's self?

but if your convinced it's your car then yeah as said check you getting full travel on you throttle cable and have a good check around do a full service fuel filter sparks etc
you get the jist maybe some 10k boot (flush all the crap out)
do a compression test see if you're piston chambers are holding a good PSi as long as all Chambers are giving the same PSI reading they should be fine,..

On a car thats done 60k and has never been ragged? Dont assume.

origional dash?? engine??? decent air filter in it??? as said before the afr is looking good so it may have to be something mechanical???

Timing slightly out? , I would pin up the bottom pulley (if you know it has not slipped) and check pins in the camshaft pulleys slide in nicely, if not that could cost you some power

Agreed that inlet/exhaust cam timing may be slightly out, depends on who does the belt. But it wouldnt rob 17Bhp surely? This pulls as well as my Rallye, feels less punchy in the mid range but is still just as quick.

Check timing, fuel filter and cat are ok. Standard proper Peugeot exhaust?

It will have fallen over and there will often be hairballs littered around the floor.

Seriously, you're going about this all wrong. Whenever I've seen people come back from dyno days with less than they hoped for, it's all about blaming the dyno, or at least the staff who ran it. Things like:

  • The dyno looked really old
  • The guy running the dyno looked really old
  • I didn't see a certificate to say it'd been calibrated
  • It was an unnaturally warm February day
  • My car was too powerful so the dyno couldn't give an accurate reading

  • Only once in my life have I managed to sit through a full dyno day, and some guy with a calculator was adding on 25% to everyone's power to account for their FWD transmission losses. "OMG, your £17 induction kit has given you 25hp! You must be well chuffed!". Never again.

    What petrol were you using? Premium unleaded does make a difference, plus a new air filter and plugs should help out. How does it feel when you drive it, does it feel slow? Also how is it usually driven, short trips or regular blasts, engine may just need a bit of a workout.

    Owain - I've not said the dyno was out? Infact, I think it's the most accurate I've ever used... a mate of mine runs it.

    Show me where I said the dyno was wrong?

    I KNOW the car is down on power, I'm trying to gauge where I should be looking.

    I'll put some decent fuel in it, change the plugs etc etc and run it up next time I go and see him.

    Why am I wrong?

    I'm not saying the dyno was inaccurate at all. Far from it, I'm saying the car is down on power and I'm looking for some advice.... if you can't offer any then that's fine.

    I would, its a dyno after all LOL its an accurate guesstimate at best, were there any other comparable vehicles there at the same time? if not I wouldn't worry about it.
