I reckon its crappy spark plugs these do make a difference well atleast im my experience, choosing the best sort can be a nightmare, Champion are usually good but not what im running on now Whistle

choosing the right ones is a right fooking doddle, NGK bog standards, twin electrode, none of this wasting money on platinum crap.

quite possible the inlet is retarded which would give less mid range torque, meaning slower to pull through the gears.

an engine that screams from 5.5 to 7k is great if you've got short close ratio gears, but you haven't got either particularly.

pop the belt covers off and pin the bottom end (if the pulley hasn't slipped....) and see how far out the cams are.

NGK are good but I warn you the firing end can drop off and into the internals which happened on my last 6 so I now use long life plugs Big grin

Was that faster video really filmed on the flat? I've seen it before on Youtube and always wondered, the way it pulls in 3rd gear is basically faster than the top of 2nd. Always thought it seemed a bit too quick personally...

I've always thought this, seen it a few times.

Also unless I have read it wrong, maybe do another test without mucking the gear change up? That could easily explain 0.5 of a second?

Aye, tis on the flat! Personally think its nowt special to 60 but after that seems to pull well. My previous car, mk1 172, would hammer it to 60 but by 70-75 my 6 would cruise past lol

Aye, esp the aluminium bonnet mk1 which mine was, wasn't quick once rolling though and wasn't as involving or fun like a 6!

paper stats give 148 lbft, though they are 5 speed? depends how they deliver that torque too.

The gfs mum has a 172 cup and it feels very fast off the line but once in to 2nd gear it seems to lose it's acceleration.

Refering back to the start of this post; my 6 feels sluggish. However i did change over the standard box for a KN apollo closed induction system with cold air feed and it seemed to be a lot faster than when i first bought the car. Come to think of it at the same time i had changed the filter i was dealing with a burst top radiator hose, which required me to remove the inlet manifold to get to the sodding hose. While I had the manifold off I cleaned the inlet pipes and throttle body of oil which may have helped i don't know.
But now my 6 is feeling sluggish again ever since my cold air pipe fell off (LoL) i've never been able to reproduce that same feeling of acceleration.
I'm going to clean my throttle body today and i'll let everyone know if it helped, plus i read it elsewhere in this site that some guy did this and his car felt like new so it's worth a shot.

I think P45 HRM has had plugs fairly recently, they'll have been NGK ones as that's the manufacturer my dads company get them from and nearly all parts came from him.

Was always buying a bit here and a bit there.......trade price, can't beat it! Thumbs up

I dont think the tyres really would contribute much. Even if they did surely a smaller profile would mean faster acceleration / speedo reading?

Depends on the make of the tyre. Wheelspin, clutch bite, transmission drag, brake pad touching slightly etc etc - there are so many factors that make a difference that its pointless imo

I would say that most standard impreza turbo 2000s are fair game once rolling, mostly because they are probably not running 100% anyway! Petrol is bloody expensive these days too LOL

I met a few clios, some were quicker, some weren't. Oh well there we go.

In my experience, the "quickest" '6's appear to be those that have 130,000+ miles on them. Yes

I'm not sure of the reason why, but I've always put it down to the fact the engine has 'loosened up'.
