Hello,
I was wondering which gearbox of 306 can support 45-50kgms (360lb/ft).
will a regular BE3 XSI 5 speed withstand it?
Cheers

The Diesel lads are getting close to that Torque and the boxes are holding it so far!

probably better fitting an ML5, or an ML6 if it'll go between the chassis legs.

I was considering the Diesel , but Isnt the Diesel ratio just not fun to drive?

Do what stans done and the gears coated in the 6 box. He runs that power and has had no issues. Iirc binka ran a standard box on his turbo with 300 torques with no issues.

Ratios too long for a petrol engine really.

Even if you have around 350bhp?
How about 205 GTI 1.9 gearbox? They say older gearboxes were much stronger than the XSI phase 2.

Depends how you are generating the power, diesel ratios are OK for turbo petrol engines.

Problems with using the ML box are:- the weight of the box, needs custom driveshafts, flywheels are heavy and it's difficulty sourcing LSDs.

I would try the XSI box and see how you get on, ( they are cheap if you do trash it) I think it's as much about how you drive it than the peak torque figure.

quaife do an LSD for the ML, gripper can make you one.

driveshafts are easy to make, flywheels are easy to lighten.

weight comes with the territory of withstanding the torque Thumbs up

BE box strength doesn't really vary much, they use pretty much the same bearings in all, minor differences in the casings, extra webbing on later gearboxes, and extra mounting bolt to the sump on some.

Do quaife really make a ML diff, heard they do but could never get a supplier to commit to deliver one that would fit my Xantia 8v turbo ML5 box. How much do gripper charge??

I agree that driveshafts are not a massive job to make, but quite expensive to have made for you.

Flywheel lightning is not cheap if done correctly( so it doesn't cut your passenger in half when it explodes at 7500+rpm.

I would fit the Be3 and see how it goes.

Older BE3 gearboxes are considered stronger than the new ones.
I've managed to aquire a 205 GTI 1.9 box and also another with mixed gears. i need to calc the mixed one ratios

My current gear ratios are 3.46,1.87,1.36,1.05,0.86 with FD of 3.79
The GTI 1.9 ratios are 2.92,1.85,1.36,1.07,0.87 with FD of 3.69
If i could use the 1.9 box with a FD of a Volcane (3.59) - i will get slightly longer gears (less pressure on them as well). with 196 kph at 6800 4th gear.
This would be ideal
Another option was to use the 6 gear box (considered very strong) with my final drive, which would be perfect, but my FD wont fit the 6.
