Ash - are you sure there's not a rogue query somewhere with a missing mysql_close() function or something? Even with 50 people browsing the site they shouldn't all be running queries at precisely the same time (not in computing terms anyway). MySQL is more than capable of handling tens of thousands of simultaneous users, so there must be something going on somewhere.

When we've seen things like this on customers' servers it's been because a query somewhere is leaving connections open rather than closing them, didn't know if that was possible?

It's not to do with the server, as I believe we're now on a dedicated server; where I work we run servers that run hundreds of websites from one MySQL server without issue.

I suspect it's the issue I said to Ash earlier.

I'm not using persistent links, so they get closed at the end of each script.

We'll find the problem eventually. Frustrating though, like you say it should be capable of running hundreds of genuine connections all day long.

Ash - have you tried doing a "show status" in MySQL when the site's down? It should show you any running queries, if they're all the same query you'll know that's the problem.

Or turn on log_slow_queries, so you can see if it's one taking forever.

Also (although it kinda gets around the issue rather than fixing it), do you do any kind of page caching? I don't really do PHP but in ASP and ColdFusion you can just set a page to regenerate only every five seconds or so, so everyone's views are a few seconds out of date but if fifty people hit the front page at the same time it only has to run the code once.

I've seen that make massive improvements on pages I've done before.

Haven't done, but I'll have a look if/when it happens next.

I don't think we're using page caching at the moment, but that would definitely speed up the top-level forum pages. I'll look into that too Thumbs up

Not sure Bill Gates would use PHP and MySQL. Obviously.

Owain. Given the reigns, how long do you reckon it would take you to diagnose and sort for good?

Not that sort of issue unfortunately, would mean trawling through code and watching database logs, which anyone could do as well as I can.

Since it's a dedicated server and you have full mysql access can you not take a look through the mysql logs to find what queries were running at the time that the site went down?

Also for reference, memcache is a php version of page caching which is pretty well documented Smile

Page caching isn't the solution. I've enabled slow query logging, will see what that highlights.
