Sounds like bottom end to me too in the video, but it might not be if you say it sounds totally different in the flesh Aaron...

A bottom end which is not too badly damaged would probably go on for 200miles+ if you weren't driving it hard, however, the 3-bolt design vernier pulleys wouldn't last that long, as once they shatter the cambelt would be thrown pretty soon afterwards.

Definitely worth a check though. In answer to your question Aaron, the earlier design pulley generally fails where the three small 10mm bolts go through the pulley, it cracks around the bolt holes and then fails completely.

Good luck Mich, keep us updated.

Stan. Smile

I would be surprised if it had the three bolt pulley design as it's a Phase III (V reg iirc) - unless the engine has been swapped before

Its an s plate phase 2. Ah, it sounds as if a lifter is loose in it collet or something like that and is very high up the engine or so it appears at least. Very strange. Smile

Reduced load on the engine, point to big end issues.

I had a RS escort once that did the big ends due to oil surge on a trackday. Drove back from Donington at 40mph and it hardly rattled at all on the overrun or down hills. What were you doing when you noticed the noise?

You might as well just start budgeting for a replacement engine if you keep on driving.

A f*cked bottom end would go on much longer than a broken up cam pulley would.
I don't know about these engines but I've heard diesels with a knocking bottom end still going 6 months later.

I wouldnt be driving it full stop.

My luck would be the rod would end up exiting the block, straight through the air con pipes and rad for good measure.

At the moment its fixable without too much expense. If it lets go completley, its a different story

On average, how much for a bottom end rebuild? Cheaper for replacement engine?

much the same, though you can't guarantee how long a replacement engine will last, if you are going to use the car I'd rebuild, if you're going to chuck it soon dump an used one in.

bottom end bearings £100, regrind £100 (as its been knocking it will need one)

second hand conrod, few quid (because the bearing spun and made the rod oval)

check the head+ skim if req, £100.

head gasket £40, bolts £15.

doubtful, that's more likely to be diesel knock, sounds quite similar.

It happened last week when my acelarator got stuck on 4-5000 revs, it did it the week before and stuck on 6000 revs (but was fine that time). It is going to a garage on Wednesday just down the road from me. I will stop driving it

if you stop driving now yeah, you'll need to add labour to that of course.

Just be careful with recon engine's, I'd ask what has been done as it could just be a S/H unit with a oil change is nothing was found to be wrong with it, the joy's of the word Recon I'm afraid

Other option is buy a late Xsara VTS for a few hundred quid and then you can test the engine first at least, Then just swap them over

That's a very good idea, you can break / scrap the rest of it and get a bit of money back too.
