Hey all, right my ticking/tapping 6 has been in bits over the past few days, there are no bent valves and the timing is spot on, is there software and a lead i can buy for checking the electronics?
Does anyone else have any ideas on the tapping?

Thanks..

How have you checked they're not bent? Could be damaged stem seals as well.

Its been at a specialist in the past few days, they have had the head off and stripped.
They have also told me that the car would definately be misfiring if it had bent valves which its not.

Not at all, as Deepak found in his thread the valves only need to be a few thousands of an inch out to cause a problem, a greasy man in overalls looking at them and saying "yeah mate, they look fine" is not enough to find a problem.

Looks like the "specialist" you took your car to is a numpty!
My Rallye was a tapper, I took all the valves out & to the naked eye they all looked fine. As I'm not a "specialist" I started lapping the valves in only to find that two valves were actually bent. My guess is your "specialist" didn't even take the valves out!!

Cool

As already mentioned it only takes a tiny bend to make them tap. Only way to really tell is to stick it on a lathe and spin it.

Hi Adie,

As Owain has pointed out, take a look at my project thread he has posted as a link.

Sometime the valves look completely straight, but the slightest bend will cause them to tap without causing a misfire. It's a real pain, but the have a very strict tolerance on their run-out.

I'd suggest showing the results I obtained to the engineer who is looking at your car.

Good luck with the fix.

Hmm i may have to have another word with them.
Might just see if i can obtain a complete head from somewhere.

Not as amusing as Kwik Fit's diagnosis..... QUOTE: "Yea mate that's big end tapping that"

Kwik Fit's great, they always brighten my day when i want a bit of a laugh!

Heh, they once told me that because my air con had a small leak it "broke their machine", despite it being the vacuum test machine that was there to test air con for leaks.

Personally I'd just buy a known non-tapper and get that on, it'll be cheaper than paying useless people to be useless Yes
