The 2nd most boring car I've ever driven was a mk4 Golf GTi. The #1 spot goes to a 5door Corsa 1.2. Mk4's are he definition of average. Very plain looking, plain interiors, plain performance... Nothing really stands out about them. In fact the only area they better the 306 is in the sound proofing, which they have tonnes of unnecessarily, so it's not really a benefit at all. Don't disregard this as being just another pug fanboy hating on a VW. I'm not a Pug fan, I just really like 205s/306s/309s because they're great cars.

Turbo cars are deceptively 'fun' and 'quick'

Really learnt this since getting my Type R. It's not the quickest car on the planet by any means but revving the shit out if it and driving it hard is way more fun than any turbo car I've owned, driven or been in. NA ftmfw

It's the reason why you'd have a Ferrari 458 over a Porsche turbo/Mclaren MP4C

Keep parking it on that grass and one day you will come out of the house to a pile of rust.

I think it looks f*cking terrible and funnily enough it has the same wheels as every other mk4, all your missing now is a CD from your interior mirror.

Oh and my 36mpg was easy. Aylesbury to Manchester no higher than 4k I actually achieved roughly 39mpg on the way home Big grin

Well i think its fairly smart and not a BAD looking car, probably very comfortable, brisk and quiet... but its looks and the way it drives are both very forgettable and dull, and these cars are incredibly common. I have never much been a fan of the VAG scene. Try giving a nod to the the driver of every one of these you see on the road and you will give yourself a concussion.

So in short, No. My opinion still hasn't changed.

Ugly looking shit boxes at the best of times....

The rear end is especially offensive.

But I don't understand how it's a better all round car?

Practicality there's pretty much no difference. Again not much in size difference. Build quality is marginally better in the Golf but chassis engineering is so much better with the 306. As is the engine. And gearbox. And styling. Pretty much the only thing the Golf is better at is build quality then.

Both have their pros and cons. Wouldn't say the Golf is "better all round" though, that implies it's better than everything about the 306 Roll eyes

Its not better in all ways no. The engine is better if you take the chance to read about it. Vw/audi/seat wouldnt have used it in so many cars if it wasnt good.

Anyone can turbo a car, but making 80+bhp per litre NA in a commercial car is worthy of credit, especially for the french in those days

A lot of people seem to forget that opinions are like arseholes... everyone has one

If you like it thats all that matters

Me personally i do like it prob because i have one myself, maybe im getting old but im quite aqquired to now not worrying about big puddles/non starting/excessive road noise

The cost of fuel these days is ridiculous, ive not had a payrise in 3 years so 50-55mpg tethers quite well compared to the 23mpg i was getting in my rallye. Quite nice to get into it on a cold morning and stick the heated leathers on/climate control in summertime.

I dont know if it may have occured to anyone but there MAYBE another very obvious reason why you see a lot of them Hmm

Ive had both a GTi-6 & Rallye and really enjoyed owning them, (gti-6 more so, rallye cost me too much money in repairs), Truth be told if i was a single lad living at home then id deffo have another, however im technically married with 2 kids so GOLF it is !

Hmm then again if i had no ties id probs be driving a M3/Cossie etc...

You will get some better feedback from ukmkivs.net matey, foolish to post this onto a gti-6 owners !

EDIT: ALL IN MY OWN OPINION OF COURSERoll eyes

Very very wise words right. The point of the post was to just say i went from a 6 and then onto a Golf and wanted opinions on it,i got loads and it was a good debate.

Best option is to own both cars lol I have a GTi-6 for fun (which is off the road due to funds lol) and a 2008 Passat TDi for daily run about, best of both worlds! Agree though, that the any other golf bar mk1 GTi and latest shape GTi is dull dull dull, driven most, all big yawns, but they do make safe, reliable and well made cars for knocking about in, just not for fun.

Simple answer, because people are like sheep Yes Look no further than iphone owners for proof of how much people follow a crowd. 99% of iphone users have bought one cos there mates got one and dont have a clue what it can and cant do. Same as the golf, the first gti was the benchmark all hot hatchs try to get near, so, as the years pass and the cars got fatter, slower and handled like a pig the, fanboys sucked on VW's teet wrongly believing they were buying the best car in its class and ignored the experts.
