Ticking could be injectors or possibly a loose spark plug. Tapping is generally one or more bent valves.

If its had a head rebuild recently, what bottom pulley did the person use to time it back up?
I hope the OE hasnt slipped as it'll be another head rebuild time Sad
Bent valves

Yes these cars have Lambda's in the Cat, my decat has a lambda in it too, it will probably revert to overfuelling if theres no lambda plugged in to stay on the safe side.

well its definately overfuelling because it gets very hot. The timing has been checked and its set right, same mechanic says there are no bent valves but he thinks its been run very low on oil at some stage in its life, forgot to ask him about the lambda on the de-cat, reason i think its not got one is that i got the cat in the boot of the car when i got the car and the lambda is still on it!

If he's checked it using a standard pulley thats slipped, it will appear fine but valve/piston contact will of occured. It will all line up using the timing holes but the crank pulley may of slipped and when it's timed back up it will be in the wrong position.
You can only be sure if you use a 205 8v pulley or a lightened pulley from Rich W.

Only the smallest amount slipped will result in bent valves.

Is it more of a ticking or a pronounce tapping?
Injectors are loud but not too loud.

Do the mechanic mark the belt or use the cam pulleys and bottom pulley to time it?
Whats the mileage on the engine/car?
