I'd like to start another thread about most suitable gearbox for track oriented 306 GTI.

So far the options are:

1) 205 GTI 1.6 with Mi16 final drive
2) 205 GTI 1.9 with Mi16 final drive
3) Mi16
4) Xsara VTS

What are the pros and cons of each configuration?

It would be great if someone can share his practical experience.

out of that lot probably the 4.4 mi16/xsara vts fina drive with the 1.9 205 gear set, 3-4-5 would be the same as the 1.6 but a longer 1st and a smaller drop to 2nd, should give something like a 125-130 ish top speed on the std limiter

Not all 1.6 have the different 1st, Later ones where mostly the same as the 1.9 not that there's any documented info on this.
Also A early 1.6 C/R box is best but finding these is difficult.

Sorry to hijack slightly but ive seen a few threads about changing the gear box on the GTI-6 for track, why is it that people do this?

What is gained from it?

its quite tall really, most tracks you'll harly get near the top of 4th let alone 5th.

giving it shorter gearign wil make it accelerate much keener.

or fit thwe gti6 clutch arm+bracket to the 1.6 box, plus swap one of the selector arms, as long as its a BE3 box that is.

if its a be1 box you might have problems but depends what year, as some can have be3 clutch arms fitted, though older ones can;t and dont have the TDC sensor hole either.
