It's a raspy sound that almost sounds like air or maybe even like a slight grinding noise. It sounds like its coming from below the inlet and fairly central but I can't pin point exactly where it's coming from.

The sound can be heard slightly when the car is idling, and does not increase with revs. However, while driving in gear it appears to become more prominent with higher revs.

At first I thought it was air and thought maybe the seal on the inlet but i've tested this and there are no leaks. Now I'm beginning to think it sounds more mechanical Unsure

Also more often than not now when I turn the car off it almost sounds like the cause of the noise winds down after everything else and makes a sound like someone taking a deep breath in and out.

Maybe a knackard bearing/pully or something? Huh?

Any ideas will be much appreciated as I'm starting to get paranoid Mellow

Many Thanks

Do you have air-con? If so take the aux belt of and if it stops then bearings in the clutch on the compressor are fubbard..

Sounds like you are describing the same noise I have.

Haven't got round to removing the aux belt yet to test but i've been advised to try that by other forum members as well.

Keep us updated?

Right, I haven't got round to removing the aux belt how ever I have managed to distinguish the whereabouts of the noise through holding the microphone of the camera up close and it becomes very apparent.

It appears to be coming from this region

Any ideas what it could be in this area that might make a sound such as this?

When standing, it doesn't appear to be effected by rev's as apparent on the video, however when driving it does...

lewisdmz - Is this the same sort of noise as your getting?

Youll need to take the inlet manifold off to check it, but it usually causes rough running as it will be leaking air into the engine.

Ah right, nah the car seems to be running as normal. My original theory was an air leak, but i've tried spraying around the inlet with WD40 to see if the revs flare and nothing which is what lead me to believe it was something more mechanical.

Also convinced it sounds like metal now rather than air flow.

I just popped into a peugeot specialist down by me to ask there opinion and they think the same as most on here. That it's one of the pulleys, when I questioned where abouts the sound was coming from he stated that obviously the sound can travel and if you listen carefully on the video the sound can be heard in a slightly different way when I move the camera over towards the aux belt.

As I said the car seems to be running fine at the moment, it's just the noise.

here's a video I have from a few months back

youtube

Sounds similar but it's hard to say, tbh mine doesn't really sound anything like it does in the video as the mic just couldn't take it.

Mine seems to get quieter if the engine is warm? Engine runs sweet, no hesitation, dodgy idle and pulls well.

How quickly will the battery run down if you remove the aux belt?

Yeah sounds like the exact same noise to me mate.

Mines running fine and doesn't show any signs of an air leak or anything like that.

If you drive along with the windows down and put your foot down, can you hear the noise a fair amount?

Not really, on idle you wouldn't even know unless you opened the bonnet.

I've got a stainless exhaust which makes it a tad hard to diagnose noises when driving LOL

Has this turnt out to be the bottom engine pulley, if this is the same with you I would get it changed fast as if it goes it's right next to the cambelt and could damage it. Just worth a check mate.

Got another quick video today, definitely seems to be coming from the helmholtz resonator. Could be a hairline crack I suppose? I'm sure this would have other noticable effects though?

Definitely would say it's the exact same noise as mine, I haven't had chance to inspect yet though with work.

I've thought about this but have heard it's not a good idea with a standard intake system?
