Hi guys. Just fitted a new Tran x plated LSD a couple of weeks back and it's making some very weird noises. Please listen to the first 30 seconds or so of the car reversing out of the pit garage and then turning onto the pit lane. Is that sound normal? I have to say the diff works great round corners and makes no noise in the straight ahead position. It just sounds like it's tearing itself apart when in slow speed corners (not under load) like in the video.

Anyone else have similar issues?

I can't watch the video as I'm on a phone but they can be noisy.

Is it new and what ramp angles/preload is it set at? What box oil are you using?

Pretty sure plate diffs make a bit of noise in situations like that.

I have heard people say things about their plate diffs clunking about while parking etc, but fine when driving.

It's a 30/60 Ramp Angle Lightweight model mate. I'm using 80w90 LSD oil but not the Millers CRX LS 80w90 NT as I had to refill after draining the expensive stuff Angry

Would the Miller NT oil really make much difference?

I run standard (comma) 75w80 oil in my boxes, nothing fancy at all.

If the diff or the plates are new or even if they've been refitted in a different configuration you need to change the oil after it beds in (50 miles or so). My brothers tran x was considerably quieter after an oil change.

All our diffs are at 45/45 and are virtually silent, 30/60 will defo be more 'snatchy' and noisy though.

Cheers Alan, so my 30/60 is more aggressive than a 45/45? I thought it was the other way round LOL

Any other guys with Tran x LSD care to listen to the clip and comment please?

Cheers,

George

Yours will be more aggressive on acceleration and less on deceleration. In theory your set-up should be better for track use mind.

Millers LSD oil is designed for dog engagement boxes. If you use it with syncro boxes you'll likely knacker the syncros pretty quick.

I've got a plate diff albeit a peugeot sport (ZF) one and it is a little bit noisy but nothing major. It isn't new by any stretch of the imagination though. It feels really strange when you're driving slowly though...

Cheers Pete. The Millers CRX LS is recommended by Tran x, that's the only reason I mentioned it. Not cheap at £40 a refill either. Did you listen to the diff in the clip as I'm trying to get a feel for what is acceptable and what's not?

I take it it's in the 205?

We had some trouble with the tran x in a 205. Webhad to change the plates round for the softer setting, think it's teeth, washer, teeth, washer, teeth or something like that we also put it back on 45/45, it's now very quiet where as before it was undrivable

It is in the 205 mate. Did Tran x make the change under warranty?

No it's something you need to do.

Mine was supplied 30/60 with the plates teeth, teeth, washer, washer, teeth

This would be fine on a 306 with power steering but me and my mate put it in without reading the instructions

We took it straight back out opened it up and set it on the other settings, now it's awesome

That's 30/60 lightweight with the plates like that.

Teeth, washer, teeth, washer, teeth is fully intervaled ie; maximum locking force.

So would a lightweight diff be manageable on a 306 with pas removed?

As said, the Oil recommended isn't best at all, The pug Syncro hub's are very fragile with the wrong oil and can wear out in no time at all/Melt like I've seen quite a few
Noise wise should only be on lock at parking speeds, nothing else.
Oil wise I stick with the normal 75/80 which is what the box likes, Yes the diff may not work 100% but it's catch 22, But having sold and fitted quite a few with this combo all good so far over 3 odd years

Thaks for all the replies guys, I appreciate it. I have spoken with Tran x this morning and it sounds like they have heard a similar story on many occasions and there's nothing to worry about.

I'm going to have it removed for an inspection anyway for my peace of mind. Tran x also recommended a heavier oil to quieten the LSD hopefully. They recommended a 75/140 rather than the 80/90............
