Well, I’m looking for a little definitive advice regarding exhausts before I go and part with more cash……….

Currently I have a straight through to back box powerflow SS system with a 3” inwardly rolled tailpipe and a drop in/out cat, although it’s never been in.

I absolutely love the ‘Tearing the Air’ raspyness I get above 4k revs and the nice big BWARP I get putting my foot down from 2k revs. What is starting to do my nut in is the resonance in the cabin between 3-4k which when following others is my usual rev range.

What addition to the exhaust system is most likely to remove the resonance whilst trying to retain the sounds I like?

Would a centre box help?

Or is putting the cat back in going to help more?

Also if I put a centre box in the system and keep the decat am I just going to blow the stuffing out of the box?

Hope someone has explored these options already and can advise the best route.

My experience with longlife was similar, i had a 2" bore from fron to back, no centre section and it was great. But boomy between the ranges you described.

The put a midbox in, quite large but it kept all the rasp, but no boom! Winner. Still miss that exhaust.

Excellent just the kind of advice I was after only thing that concerns me a little is i've read that with a decat on your likely to blow the stuffing out of a centre box Sad

anyone know if this is just an old wives tale?

Na i never blew out the centre box. Even when it used to pop and bang it never blew out the centre box.I think if the box is biult propperly you should be fine.

good this is the kinda stuff i wanted to hear before parting with more cash!! Just got to try and convince the guys who built my powerflow system that they want to put a centre box in for a nice price now!

they did manage to put two miles on the car last time Hmm

Weld a standard centre box in there straight though with baffles. I have 2.25 straight through from front to back to a small longlife back box with 2.5 rolled tip. LOVE it! Raspy, pops, bangs, flames. Not really drownie like others ive heard but am also thinking of welding a centre in to bring it down a few db as its 103dp at 6k... Although i also dont want to as ot sounds great.

your lucky you've escaped the drone with your set up is kind of embarrassing when you cant hear to think!!

Gonna have a chat with the guys later today and will report back when i get something done so others will be aware of what worked out for me or not...... LOL

out of all the combos ive tired i believe that with a centre box a cat sounds better.

Without a center box a decat sounds better.

A cat without a centre box sounds horrific so boomy.

My experience with numerous exhaust systems is basically any straight through system on a four cylinder engine will have a boom/resonance just above 3000 rpm as this is an inherent frequency produced by a 4pot which finds its way uninterrupted to the tail pipe. To interrupt it you would need either multiple straight through mid boxes or a reverse flowing baffled muffler ( like the standard backbox)
A race tube (no mid box) with a standard backbox gives a very crisp raspy sound without any boom. I've used a lot of turbo flow mufflers on hot rods/muscle cars before with great crackles and rasp.



Basically any straight through will have an element of resonance at about 3200 rpm on a 4 banger.

Excellent, this forum always comes up trumps on the technical knowledge!!

following on from the above and the fact that a straight 4 makes this resonance around/above the 3k mark, I instantly wondered what the effects of using one of these alloy bungs on the inlet manifold would have over the exhaust note??

would/does it change exhaust note/resonance does anyone have any experience of this they can share?

The resonance i usually caused because of the long midsection the gas's have to travel down, a "booster" or a middle box will help, but the bigger you go, the more it will have an impact on the sound.

Real shame exhaust companies cant work with ppl like a try before you buy, I totally understand why they cant but would be more preferably when someone is looking for a certain sound.

I'm interested in seeing how altering the resonance at the inlet will affect it at the zorst might be downing a pint of milk at some point today for a cheap trial Wink

I have a stainless centre and rear exhaust system on my car and the centre box is rattling from the inside and doing my head in.
My freind was going to cut the box out on wednesday and just put a tube instead.
I still have a cat on there so is this gonna be a bad idear?Blink
