I used the old seal as a drift, i could not find anything the same size. Im going to start the engine without gearbox oil in to test its fitted correctly with no leaks coming out the gearbox.

There are parts in the gearbox which are spinning if the engine is running, so I wouldn't want to be running the engine with no gearbox oil fitted. No

As above.

Also can't see the point to trying that?Dunno

As this seal only seals engine oil,if you can't tell eng oil from gearbox oil perhaps you should not be working on cars!!!!Thumbs up

I know what gearbox oil is compared to engine oil ffs.

I thought about doing it that way to check the seal wont be leaking at engine speed. The gears are not on any kind of load are they. It saves having to fill the gearbox, fit driveshafts and then re-fitting it all again with new driveshaft seals, after realising the seal is leaking. I dont want any engine oil around my new clutch etc. I was only going to start the engine for a few seconds anyway.

This is the first time fitting a fly wheel seal and did make sure it was around the same place the old one was, then applied some moly grease around the lips.

it'll take more than a few seconds to find an engine oil leak if there is one, in which time you could have damaged the gearbox bearings, it is not just the gears that are lubricated by oil.

do a proper job putting it together and you will not have any leaks.

If you've fitted the seal badly enough for it to leak in a few seconds you deffo should not be working on your engine!!!LOL

perhaps you best pop a picture up of the seal fitted for our opinions.........Whistle

Its not about whether i can or cant do it, its about preventing possible problems.

Its the picture, i placed my finger around the seal and the edge of the crank to the seal is the same all round. I took the picture from above instead of straight at it which is why the shadow makes it look further in at the top.

I put it in the same as what the original one was around the crank not the block, or there abouts. Your seal looks different to my one.

To me it looks further in at the bottom than it is at the top.

Guess if it does leak it will be small and would have to do it all again.

I have done this a few times, first time i got the sealing from a local parts dealer it was same size except from how deep it went. this one went too far when it was flush with the block... and yes it was leaking.. Next time i used original one and no leak.

After this i always use the one from peugeot to be sure its the right one. As many say here as long as its flush with the block it should be fine.

I would always use an OE part when doing this job. Yes

It's such a ballache of a task that you wouldn't want to have to do it twice for the sake of buying a slightly "cheaper" pattern part. Wink
