Na you wont need zero gauge, my kit was nowhere near as thick as zero gauge wire. PM swampy s16 and he will tell you

4 gauge sounds a bit small to me, would have thought you need something a bit bigger.

Are you sure the battery isn't knackered?

I used 170A cable from battery to starter and spurred off that with 110A cable to alternator and two connections in the fuse box.

I used 35mm squared for mine but it was a long run all the way to the boot, I probably could've got away with 25mm squared though.

The 170A i used looks like its 25mm^2, seems to crank the engine over just fine using a starter from a Turbo Diesel and a Powervamp Racing 25 battery.
My battery is sat under the boot floor where the spare wheel would normally be, the cable runs to the dash where the headunit would be to a killswitch then out to the starter motor.
