Hi,

I have a recently purchased a track 306 with a S16 engine and apparently a MI16 inlet manifold, and after have an issue with it running very rich with a lack of power low down in the rev range.

I have replaced the Lambda sensor, which appeared to fix it at first??? but literally 50 miles or so and its the same again.

Any help or ideas would be most appreciated??

Thanks

Does it have a map sensor or air mass sensor? Water temp is a good one too and cheap to change. Check all the wiring to the sensor plugs and that the pins are all ok.

Anything daft like an adjustable fuel regulator or 'chip' in the ecu? The lambda new and correct part?

What management is it using? S16 or Mi16? Just the S16 uses an adjustable length inlet manifold so that will change the afr over the rev range compared to the Mi16 inlet.

Yes MAP sensor is disconnected and thats a GTi6 manifold, not Mi16. I'd PM 'welshpug!' and ask him to look at it. Will have a better idea than me.

The Map sensor on the S16 is built into the ecu, there should be a vacuum pipe from the inlet manifold connected to the brass pipe coming out of the top of the ecu.

The reason it's flat until 4.5krpm is because you no longer have the variable inlet manifold on it. Not sure if there is a way to help fix that with out swapping the inlet back

Mines doing the running crazy rich thing at the moment, i've tried changing every sensor apart from the map sensor (can't seem to get a replacement from Bosch eitherSad) and the throttle position sensor (next on my list)

Why do you reckon someone fitted this manifold onto the S16 engine?

Possibly because some people see the S16 manifold as complicated (it's not really) and unreliable so they take it off thinking it'll make it better but it doesn't always work.

Looking at the pics the vacuum feed to the map sensor is teed from the fuel pressure regulator vacuum feed, that may be adding to the problem

How could I plumb it in better to hopefully improve it if this isn't helping?

Not sure on that one, as far as I know the GTi manifold only has one vacuum port. It may not be causing the problem but thought i'd mention it in case we can't find what else is causing it to over fuel.

running the vacuum as shown shouldnt cause any issues, its how I built up an RFY (2.0 MI16/S16/ZX 16v) in a 205 a few years ago for someone, do make sure the pipe is still connected to the ecu properly though.

Check that the TPS is connected and working, doesnt matter if its the RFS ir RFY tps as they both work the same IIRC.

I see the Idle valve is conencted fine, idle speed ok?

Which injectors does it have? Should be Bosch yellows on this engine+ecu combination, NOT the Green RFS items.

same setup on my other 306, it also feels a bit flat below 4k but not *that* bad, goes like stink though other than that

they often "feel" a bit flat below 4-4.5k, but only because they go nuts above there Big grin
