Found a nice Rallye for sale but it has 143,000 on the clock.....car has been very well looked after including pretty much all the big jobs that need doing on a 6/rallye but how do these engines fare with this sort of mileage on them??....this car would be used for the ring this year so am worried it may not be strong enough to take the abuse. Also how much would i expect to pay for a bottom end refresh(head has been done).
Dont know whether to just leave it or try and bargain hard with the price!!!

Yep, it all depends on what kind of life the engine's had and how well it's been looked after.

As a contrast to Miles' good condition high miler I've seen bottom ends go at sub 80k before, because they've been abused and run on cheap oil.

It seems that the car has been up and down motorways for a lot of its life so has had a relatively easy life.....saying that,a lot depends on servicing intervals and oil quality i guess....i'll have to find out a bit more about its service history i think.

Good idea, things that hurt me were when the Alternator went, Crankshaft Pulley, things like that. A car with that sort of miles has either had alot of new parts or it's ready for them......and if it is then you could find yourself replacing bit after bit to keep yourself happy with it...... ahh hang on that's part of the fun isn't it Laugh

But yeah look for bills for the bigger items, if they haven't been replaced then chances are they will need to be shortly!

seems that high mileage is not the issue here, its servicing and maintenance which is the key to a reliable 6/rallye!

Mines just rolled over to 137, full peugeot service history.

Drives spot on and pulls very well Smile engine oil is still golden after 3k.

Wouldnt worry about mileage as long as its backed up by plenty of history

Full Pug history Lou? Nice to have

I would check it all through to see what's been done. One of my previous 306 had a full Pug history, each of the services after 40k was a basic service. This meant no spark plug change or 60k miles. Winner

Yours should be all good, especially seeings as a P1 it should have been serviced a lot more regularly than my old P3, it is worth a look though.

Gearbox oil is also worth checking - it gets topped up by Pug but never changed

Every reciept and mot from new and a fully stamped service book Smile

Sparkplugs changed 10k ago iirc

counted it up and its had over £2000 spent in the last 3-4 years (crankshaft pulley, alternator, radiator, pas pump, mots and servicing)

Only done about 3k a year for the past 4 years too.

Il be getting the cambelt changed next week because its due in april, thanks for the advice il probably change the gearbox oil

Ouch, starting to add up to a fair bit more than an £800 car. Still, a good GTI-6 is worth it

My red 6 had done 125k when I sold it nearly 2 years ago and still going now, and the engine in my black 6 only got removed at 136k as the valve timing was out so valves had kissed the pistons. Would have carried on for years otherwise.

...Mines done just over 190,000 and runs fine, I did a compression test and was spot on. Uses no oil or water and as far as I'm aware has never been apart. Still pulls very well!

I went to pick up some parts from him 3 weeks ago or so and it was sat in the corner. I asked about it and from memory he said it was on 285k but that the HG had failed, but nothing that a rebuild in the summer wouldn't solve.
